Opening Day afternoon hunt

Unread postby Jamebo » Fri Sep 21, 2012 3:18 pm

Well, what an afternoon my 10yr old son and I had. We had a nice setup on the edge of lots of oaks sitting between a couple of trails feeding into it. The wind was right for that eve, so we headed out at 3:30pm. The action started early with does coming out around 5:30 feeding on acorns and new growth coming up. A big 6ptr came out and I ended passing a smaller 8ptr that came within 10yds. Twenty minutes later, a real big 8ptr came up another trail and ended up within 10 yds of us. I had no shot and was waiting for this buck to keep walking by so I could get an arrow off. Well, he ended up stopping at 10yds and scanned the clearcut in front of him. As he was scanning, my boy moved a little and you know the rest of the story....busted. It really was a cool experience even though I didn't put my tag on him, I must say. I sat there for a moment and remembered back when i was his age and thought how cool that would have been to see a 8ptr that big at such a close range. I havn't even lost sleep over it, just cool to have a setup work that I scouted for a year ago. Maybe my arrow may find that buck another day.

A great shared memory that will be cherished for a long time to come. 8-)

Cool story, like you said sometimes the experience is just as good or better than the kill.

Sounds like a good hunt to me.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
