Bed Hunting, First Sit
Well, one of the beds I found back in the winter is on the side of a small ridge of a wooded draw beside of a 4 lane hyway, not an interstate, just a limited access hyway. Anyway, for the last week or so I've been watchin the small bottom cornfield this draw comes out into. I've been watchin it from across the 4 lane hyway as best I could, it's hard to get into a postion to see it very good without being seen by the buck, but I have gotten enough sightings to give him a try. I wasn't sure if he was good enough to shoot, but decided to give him a shot on the first opportunity. Sunday evening was the day. Wind was perfect. I slipped in from the other side of the farm, about 3/4 mile track, skirted the ridge until I figured I was close enough. There wasn't much for trees, but there were some deadfalls along the base of the ridge. I climbed up on the uphill side of one and it put me 6-7' above the bottom of the draw and hid pretty good. 15 minutes before dark here he came. Passed by me by at 20 yards. He looked to be a 2yo, maybe 100" I let him go. He never knew I was there. I was pumped. First "on purpose" bed hunt and I consider it a major success, even tho I didn't kill him. Did I say I'm pumped??
On the way out I checked a camera I have hangin fairly close. I had a pic of him from the day before. This is him....

I now remember why I haven't hunted September in the last several years. It was 79 degrees when I left the truck. Sweat was drippin off my forehead when I finally got set up. Mosquitos were terrible. Worth the hassle tho

Not every successful hunt ends with a kill..this is a perfect example! Still waiting on my first calculated bed hunt to work out like this...it's exciting!

Re: Bed Hunting, First Sit
Sounds like a great hunt. Congrats on putting it all together and executing. Now you have a bid you can continue to hunt. You know what conditions you need and who knows maybe a bigger deer will push him out later in the year
