with the dry weather we have, there was so much noise when I was walking. I have walked in cattails also and it is extremly loud when walking also. if the noisier the walk, do you guys take that much longer to walk to your spot? or is it when you get close to the spot then you start slowing down your walk?
i just felt like no matter how slow i went i was making so much noise. i was just getting frustrated.

I always walk real slow once I get close or where it starts to get "good". It took me 1 hour 10 minutes to walk .6 miles to my tree the other day. I would say that is about average. I like to look at the area as I walk in to get a feel for the activity.

Re: patience when walking to your stand
I was also experiencing dried up cattails underneath the new cattails walking out to my stand on Saturday. It is very loud and almost impossible not to make noise but if you stop and wait for the wind, take a couple of steps, stop, couple steps, you eventually inch your way there. Its a pain but it's better than letting them know your there.

Re: patience when walking to your stand
I have been dealing with some of that too, not as bad as during the rut though when you are walking on potato chips with all the leaves being down. I have been leaving an hour or two earlier than normal and I really like the relaxed pace. If I do make noise, I stop for a few minutes. I know it wasn't a big buck but by doing this yesterday I walked within 15 yards of a bedded doe, I thought that was pretty good considering I didn't know she was even there until she jumped up.

A few years back I spent two hours walking 200 yards - only to bust the beast 15 yards from me

Re: patience when walking to your stand
Not that I sprint or even walk fast, but I feel as if the faster I can get into my stand and then let things settle down....the better off I am. No idea if it has any merit to it, but that's what I do. My logic is that no matter if I'm walking at a descent pace or walking turtle slow....I'm going to bump whatever deer that are actually in my path. So why not get there, get up the tree and get it over with. With trying to be as quiet as I can, but being efficiently fast about it.

Try varying the cadence to your steps. Shuffle your feet with a few quick steps now and again, take a moment to pause as most deer do and step on your toes to lighten the stomp of your big feet. During the rut I've had on more than enough occasions bucks come to investigate the sound I made walking in, so I've got an arrow knocked most of my walks in when I'm in likely areas.
