Ma nature can be cruel

Unread postby hoot » Wed Sep 12, 2012 12:59 pm

I was out on the river other day pullin cam cards and on my way to check some new property. Just as i was docking canoe i heard a faint splash. Thinking it was just another carp or turtle, i turned to look and seen antlers sticking out of water 15ft away. It was a dying buck barely able to keep his head up. I backed canoe out and made my way over. By the time i got to him he had gone under and drowned. Was a sad sight to witness.
I believe he got tagged by a car. Both brows and 2 tines on one side were broken. I didnt see any visible wounds, though i didnt flip it. He appears to be yearling 8pt.
Hate to see em go this way

Hi Gary - I hope your summer went well!

Wow that's quite a coincience of bad luck - hate to see it too...
What about some of the diseases as the possible culprit?

Did you leave it in the water?

Interesting post, certainly something you don't see every day. That's a lot of broken tines, thanks for putting it up hoot.

hi Ed! Summer was ok. yours? cant wait to sit in a tree though. though schools gonna really limit that this year.
i was talkin to a fellow beast member via text the day i came across it. live actually. gotta love technology sometimes. lol. he mentioned ehd. i contacted local warden and explained story. he gave me email for the local biologist. so i emailed him the story along with pics. pics are gps tagged so it should take him right to it. i also explained where he could find him.
i did leave him in the water. figured it was best. like a burial at sea.

If he got hit by a car probably had serious internal injuries and headed to water to cool down. Kinda like a liver shot deer does. Just a thought.

thats exactly what i was thinking. i know a wounded deer generally heads to water. the broken tines and lack of visible wounds leads me to believe he got tagged. nearest road is about 1/2-3/4 mile. closer to 3/4

Many cases of EHD around here this year. Seems they seek out water when they get sick. I'd wonder about it.......

Guys I know have been finding dead bucks all over the place in S.E. Wisconsin. Last week a friend found three dead bucks in a marsh with 100 yards of each other.
