The power of TOPO and Proper Understanding = RESULTS

Unread postby Edcyclopedia » Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:18 am

This post is generated from doing some back reasearching for next weekends Bow opener in NH on the 15th...

Most / some of us Beasts seem intrigued and trying to gain knowledge for the upper hand in which TOPO Power is Real!
(Catchy little title for a DVD someday ;) ) The following is an example of putting together the last few years.
I'm excited to just realize the close proximity of my sightings and I still have quite a few GREEN dots left to explore!!!

I would like to thank Autumn Ninja for his expertise about 3 or 4 years back with this particular map.
I told him about 2 years ago I would post his findings and here we are - a little late, but not to worry, never forgotten.

I believe this is him about 1/3 mile North (It would be nice to be wrong though, then I'd have TWO Big Bucks to chase!)

Ed, I wish you the best this season. I would love to hunt up in that terrain with you one day. It seems like an awesome challenge, yet very worthwhile.

Go Ed.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I missed the original posting of that map. Do you care to explain the reasoning behind the #1, #2, #3 spots? Why are the green dots in those locations?

I see the un-numbered green dot in the northwest part of the map is a funnel.

The map was marked up by our own topo genius Autumn Ninja for buck bedding areas. (there's over a dozen potential beds - yee ha)

As I reviewed this parcel of land I started daydreaming about my encounters and Boom! - I realized the exact spots my encounters happen the last few years.

That NW spot you mention will be one of my spots I think I might hit this weekend.
Kind of a recon mission sitting a little lower on the hill, hoping he comes down the hill to feed when the sun starts to set (if the winds right).
If I don't see any real good sign I'll leave it alone for the rut as you indicated...

What program was used to overlay the tool and areal view maps? I would love to be able to do that instead of switching back and forth.

And good luck :)

Hi Matt,

http://www.mapcard.com/
$30/yr.

Also do a search for topo maps as there was a bunch of options Beasts brought to the thread so you can find the fit you like.

I'm partial to this one as I have been using for a handful of years, but it is not the most recent aerial photos.
To combat this (pun intended - my military friend ;) ) I pop open Google Earth and fine tune based on the comparison's...
