Crossing mucky water?
Aside from the obvious (canoe, kayak) any ideas to cross deep mucky water? Im talking the kind of muck that you sink so deep waders are out of the question. I have chest waders I used in the spot recently and although it wasn't over my chest I sunk way to far to even move. This is a spot that's alreay a long ways back on public so dragging a kayak out there or leaving something isn't an option. No downed trees to cross in the area either. Do you guys have any spots like that on public where you can't really leave anything?

Re: Crossing mucky water?
I was actually going to post a very similar question - i ran across the same thing this past weekend and it sounds like our situations are identical. I was trying to think of somehow to make like a snowshoe type thing that would be wide enough to keep me up but I haven't had the time to start working on anything yet. The river that I was going to canoe in on is completely dry and just a big mucky hole now that sucked me in up to my waist.

I've sunk palates before in private land but don't want to do anything like that on public. maybe you could cut some ply wood squares and place them down? If it's private land that is.
I though in my case about tying off some rope from one tree to another and kinda shimmy across but would prove difficult with bow, stand, etc.

Ridge how far do you have to cross? Could you drag a bunch of dead trees and brush and make yourself a little mud bridge. It might be a ton of work but I don't think that will scare you. Just don't make it too nice or you might get some company.

I'd say it's 15 feet across where I need to get.

How about a big innertube? I remember when i was a kid we always innertubed. Throw a piece of plywood on top and you have a mini raft. Thats something that could be left out there buried in the grass deflated. Doesnt take much to fill em.

Either waders with snow-shoes or a small inflatable raft.

I have a small inflatable but I'd hate to leave it and would flat out kill me to blow it up by mouth. Maybe a foot pump . Good ideas..

Yeah, my little inflatable came with a little accordion style pump so inflating it is a breeze.

This, plus sticks shoved in the muck vertically so I have something to help keep my balance.

Small inflatable boat...I've done this, but I had to use a battery operated pump. I stashed mine in a rootwad near the creek's edge and used it to go across and comeback.
