Sleeper counties for big bucks in Wisconsin

Unread postby BigHills BuckHunter » Mon Aug 27, 2012 5:29 am

WE all know Buffalo County as being the Mecca for Huge Bucks. I believe it has the most entries in PY and BC.

With that said what are some sleeper counties In your opinion for WI?

I think Vernon, Jackson, Pierce, Bayfield and Dunn Counties are sleepers for a chance at a Booner. Im a little biased on one of the counties though. :D

Im sure there are some southern counties in the state too, but Im unfamiliar with that area.

I will take a gamble and say Dunn County, Pierce County for deer. I believe Dunn County will be the next 'mecca' for big bucks. The northern half of the county has thousands of acres of hard woods and steep, long ridges and ravines. Pierce county is kinda the same, but with more farmland and developments popping up as the Twin Cities continues to grow eastward into Wisconsin. St. Croix county is seeing alot of that expansion too.

i don't believe all the posting for P&Y by county. they are close, but not right on. there are so many people that keep very quiet about what they kill and don't register their bucks to the P&Y. I would hunt Waupaca and Shawano counties as my choices. the central part of the state is all crops and has a good number of deer and also a good number of big bucks. I would bet if we knew the exact numbers of P&Y bucks harvested, these two counties would be in the top 5 every year or very close to it.

Two years in a row I seen pics of slobs from Fond du lac county. A lot of ppl mention counties I dont consider sleepers. Two bucks stick in my mind from Fond du lac county I seen pics on here. I think around fond du lac itself too. But in Wisconsin Ive hunted a lot of counties and if you give a buck 4plus years it's big period. That's what make Waukesha and Dane so good a lot of private land you most likely will never go on or anyone will hunt for that matter.

Pepid, Monroe, Dane, Iowa, Sauk, etc etc... they just need age. I would hunt any of them in an area with lighter hunting pressure or marsh/swamp/big timber to allow deer to get age on them. Age is the key....
