I range a bunch of landmarks when I get settled in but some to forget some of them as the morning or evening goes on!! So instead of taking my rangefinder out every hour with the movement involved I like to take 10 yard increments at a time to my intended target. Been doing this for years and have become halfway decent at it...

Thats pretty much what I do. Never really seems to be much of an opportunity to range the animal itself.

I used to pick out landmarks and judge the animal from the landmarks.

I missed what would have been my largest bodied and racked buck last season from not knowing the yards.

I bought a range finder now. :D

I use a rangefinder on various trails and shooting lanes.

Permanant stands or blinds I have been known to put flags in the ground or tie ribbon to trees/brush.

Turkey hunting from a blind I usually use flags.

I never have thought in terms of how many yds when I shoot bows. When I get a new bow..recurve again now..I shoot it and see how far I can back up before it starts to drop. From that distance on I know I have to hold over. Shooting it a lot lets me know how much from how far. How far might be pretty far or not too far...just takes looking and shooting a lot.

Kinda like Dave said, I break it down in 10 yard increments

I use a Nikon rangefinder and I usually range several areas before the deer show up so I know the distance before hand

Pre-range everything when I get into stand with my rangefinder. One of the best pieces of equipment I've purchased over the years hands down.

Experience and practice mostly. I bought a rangefinder this summer mostly to set up bows and must say it's a nice thing to have. I find myself estimating yardages and then confirming how close or off I am with the rangefinder, It's actually is good practice. I'll probably bring it along this season and use it to check yardage to the point I expect to kill the deer but I don't know if it will find a permanent place in my gear load out or not yet because at the 0-20 range I'm likely to skewer a buck I don't really need to range find. But it's cool and fun so who knows..

I guess.

Put me in the camp that doesn't own a range finder.

I have missed so many deer because of it, they could make a commercial out of my mistakes.

I do not use a range finder, I am really good at guaging yardage out to about 60 yards. I can almost always get withen 3 of four yards, i practice all the time though. I will pick out an object guess the yardage then decide where i would hold which pin on a bucks vitals, then step off the yardage. When hunting i have noticed it is easier to get closer on yardage when you guess the yardage of a tree the deer is standing by at eye level. thats just my opinion though.
