How well can they smell?
I obviously know no one on this forum is a deer, but how keen do you think their sense of smell really is? I have a few stand spots where when I access them the wind will carry my scent towards the bedding area, there is just no way around it. I can walk way around though, being some 300 to 500 yards away when my scent will be drifting that way. What really is a safe distance to approach when the prevailing wind will carry your scent towards that particular bedding area?

Re: How well can they smell?
I have seen doe groups come out and get my wind at 300 yards.
Then I watched they go away.

I think deer can smell from more than 500 yards away, but how they react to smell from that distance is questionable, they may not bust out but would definately be alert to your presence, but if your area has any terrain features it is doubtful your scent would be flowing directly to them.

I know I can smell a steakhouse from 300 yards so a whitetail nose being at least 100 times better can smell our stinky asses from well, a long damn ways away

If your scent is going to be hitting the bedding area while your on stand, forget it that spot. If its going to drift in from 400+ yards as your on your way to the stand try to find another way to the stand. If there is no other way, go to your stand really early and give them time to forget about you or hope it don't drift in.
