Which state?

Unread postby kenn1320 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:45 am

Im considering trying another state close enough to hunt several times a season. I currently hunt KS and while its a great place, I get 1 trip out there and if your not there for a week+, your just exhausted from the drive. I can be about anywhere in Ohio in 7hrs and up around Madison Wisconsin in 7hrs. Not sure how far into Indian, but likely a long ways. If you were planning to hunt public land, which of these states would you choose and why? Looks like all but Wisconsin you buy 1 license and its good for 1 buck, regardless of weapon used. Im mainly a bow hunter, but this does give extra options. If my licensing info is wrong, please correct me.

Not interested in Missouri? I did vote Ohio.

Wisconsin has a ton of public land. It can be tough hunting, but I would imagine you are used to worse in Michigan. Wisconsin also gives you the option of hunting big woods, marsh, or hill country all on public. I have never hunted Michigan, but I can guarantee you there are good bucks on Wisconsin public land.

I voted Ohio, I have never hunted there, but I can only imagine that their public land isn't as pressured as it is here in WI.

Wisconsin would be a good choice, but I picked Ohio. They have some awesome public hill country where you can get away from other hunters. Down around Portsmouth is a good area, but you better be in good shape!!!
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

I voted Ohio. Just because thats where I drive and hunt. The public land there really consist of two major terrains. Wayne National Forest can be very hilly and steep. Other public grounds on the state can be somewhat rolling hills. HOWEVER, just like any other state, Ohio public grounds gets hammered! Especially when the orange army rolls out and begins the deer drives :)

If I had an option to hunt any of the other places you selected on your poll, I would go to KY for an early season bow trip and a rut hunt!

I voted Wisconsin but you could make a case for each one of those states. Plus if you pick Kentucky you could go after a velvet buck.

Voted KY, but as Stanley mentioned MO is another good thought!!!

I've hunted WNF during Muzzle season (Jan) in 2010 & 2012 and wasn't overly impressed...
Seems like big presssure.

Ohio for sure. The quality of PL bucks that comes out of Ohio every year seems to be substantially more then any other state. JMO.

Gun doesnt start till late November. Maybe we can meet up out there!
