Hunting a single buck. Who has pulled it off?
I have to admit I have only been able to do it once and it is the buck in my avatar. How many out there have done it? I mean decided that it was that deer or nothing and made it happen? I'd love to hear the story! Especially those that occurred on public land regardless how big the buck is.

Congratulation's on your great buck In your avatar!! Did you hunt only him? I know you asked for success story's but thought I'd share this story anyway. I should've pulled this endeavor off In 2009. I ended up wounding a mid 150's buck. I hunted only him all year, saw him 5 times. I passed on some good bucks that I normally would have shot but I wanted that other buck and only him. In 2010 I hunted him souly again. I had him as close as 12 yards but no shot presented Itself. Saw him 4 times In 2010. I also passed up some other nice bucks that year too cause I wanted him and only him.
I absolutely love hunting just one buck.

I've done it several times on target bucks. I don't just hunt one buck though per season. I usually have 5 or 6 between Michigan and Northern Ohio that I go after. Basically the most mature bucks I can find through scouting.
Not sure if this is what you mean.

not exactly but there were 2 that i was hunting exclusively last year in kenosha county. i have been hunting this place for years now and have never drew my bow on a buck till i shot that 17 pointer last year . it was him or the other monster he was running with the year before or nothing. but we figured the other buck died because he never showed last year. its such a good farm im only interested in a big one there . because between me and another guy we only hunt it a handful of times all year usually. he was hunting the same buck.so he didnt fill a tag last year.

2010:
Had this buck pass at the break of day while in a stand, mid October.
Relocated the stand for the next morning, while he was coming I had a doe blow at me from the other direction.....that did not work out for the buck , but I shot the doe.
Three evenings later I shot him at 25 yards from a stand a hundred yards away.
2006:
Watched this buck late summer into October.
Shot him October 16th at 70 yards.

I was hunting the area I had seen those deer in daylight.
Routes from bedding, I had no idea where their exact bedding was just a general area of a few acres.

I think if you can pull this off on a consistant basis year after year you are at the top of your game. Unfortunately I have a ways to go to reach this level since every single buck I killed was the first time I laid eyes on it. There have been many single target bucks I have hunted over the years and had great encounters with them but never sealed the deal on any of them and ended up killing another buck that I had no idea was around. Hoping this is the year I will finally accomplish this feat.

I have a number of times...until recently that is how I always hunted...one deer or nothing because that was usually all I could find to hunt as far as mature deer. Not very many around these parts

Re: Hunting a single buck. Who has pulled it off?
Yes I was hunting the buck in my avatar exclusively but I happend to kill him early in October. The reason I was hunting him exclusively is because he was living in a very small area out in the middle of a 1200 acre corn field. The next cover was over a mile away. I knew that when the corn came out he would vacate due to the lack of cover. I had a two week window in October at best. I did know where he beded. After that experience I thought I could do it over and over again on bucks. But I lost all my places to hunt and then because the public areas are so small in my area and so hard to get away from people I kinda got lazy. Other things in life also got in the way for a few years. But I'm back at it now and have a lot of catching up to do! I'm already having a hard time sleeping since my new plans keep playing in my head over and over. I have decided that since my access to private land always seems to be very limited and the fact that I have never had a private parcel that I can hunt more than three years in a row that it would be in my best interests to really learn all the public areas in my area. You never lose permission to hunt public ground. It's always there. I have lowered my hopes a bit as far as deer size is concerned. But I'm feeling good about it. In fact as I write this I'm waiting for dark a half mile from the road watching a small known buck bedding area from a distance to see if anything of interest steps out. Life is good!
