Re: Unlearning your bad hunting habits.
Calling to often or in areas where bucks have likely heard it multiple times... I have never called in a buck over 3yrs of age in WI to shooting range. Rattling antlers I have brought them in down wind at 75-100 yards

Re: Unlearning your bad hunting habits.
Not necessarily a bad habit, but kind of along the lines of what others have said. Having the confidence to keep doing what I think is right and not always get the results I desire. I have always wanted to kill big bucks and have yet to shoot a truly mature buck, but I believe that I am on the path now. It took me a while to get to that point where I was willing to try to "unlearn" the crap that I did before that didn't produce the results I wanted, but its hard to go out and tell your buddies that you are trying new tactics only to get ridiculed when those new tactics don't produce right away.

Don't sound much like friends to me... When dealing with people like that, I would keep my ideas to my self.

Re: Unlearning your bad hunting habits.
Being too honest.
I just realized this problem yesterday.
I had told a buddy of mine where I shot a real nice buck last year in a new area I hunted. I got a few pics of some nice rubs from him yesterday and a message: "Man, this spot you found looks great, we are going to kill some bucks out of here this year!"...
I just need to keep my mouth shut.

Man, I learned that lesson one year when one of my "buddies" shot a 170 some NT on his first and only sit of the year out of my stand...
Now, I keep my findings to myself...

Yikes!
IDK if it is the same with you but I find it comical that all of my hunting buddies are quick to tell me how lucky I am everytime I kill a buck, but then proceed to follow me around the woods. I don't get it.

Oh yeah, it's the same. I think a lot of people like to talk smack, but can't really backup what they say in regards to hunting bucks.

Re: Unlearning your bad hunting habits.
One of the worst habits I consistently hear from talking to hunters across the country is foregoing the experience of the hunt for the overwhelming and often unrealistic goal of shooting giant deer. I certainly understand where they are coming from, as I too was once of this mindset. No matter your goals please remember to enjoy the experience.
God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Thats a great point Bob... I know a few hunters who say they love to deer hunt but seem angry all the time when they don't succeed... As hunters I think a lot of us go thru that phase in our growth. Hunting is much more enjoyable when it does not matter if you succeed.

Not proud to say I went through this for sure a few years ago when I first focused on hunting older bucks. I was always aggravated with my hunting buddies because I felt that their carelessness was hurting my chances since we hunted the same ground. I would also really get down on myself at any missed opportunity since they were few and fleeting. The real problem was that I was having inconsistent success at getting encounters with nice bucks and I couldn't figure out what separated the successes from the failures. The more I researched, reflected and improved my strategy, I started finding more consistent success. I quickly realized that the joy is in the experience and the process, killing big bucks just becomes a by-product of those two things.

Re: Unlearning your bad hunting habits.
My #1 bad habit is being lackadaisacal. Particularly on entry/exit.
#2 - Also being lackadaisacal, hunting my same old easy spots and hoping for different results.
#3 - Not being patient and hunting when the wind will get me busted because that is where I want to go on a particular day.
#4 - Allowing myself to get frustrated trying to hang a stand and getting sloppy with noise.

This one has to be the most important one.. I used to get bent out of shape if things don't go right, or if i feel like I'm not measuring up. Now I've learned to laugh at myself and not take it so seriously.. Most importantly to have fun with it.
When I find a great spot, my old habits have me just marking it on the map and moving on. I have to remind myself to look at how the wind will play out, pick out some set ups, and access routes.
I also fall into the trap of settling for "good" deer sign, when what I need is more of the mature buck sign.
