Turkeys and Deer

Unread postby rutnbuck » Tue Jul 31, 2012 9:51 am

Does anybody think that big slobs follow around with Turkeys? If I was a big slob I would be traveling with them since they are so alert all the time. When I see them I REALLY perk up quickly getting bow in hand and ready since I always think that a big slob is just behind them waiting for them to pass safe ground. Any thoughts or experiences?

I have not seen deer when turkeys pass thru. I think deer trust their own sense of hearing more than a nearby turkeys therefore with all the noise turkeys make I think deer will steer clear of turkeys in wooded areas. An open field would be a different story.

From what I've seen, some deer don't mind turkeys while some deer won't tolerate them and leave the area. I suppose it depends on their personality or mood?
I would imagine most SLOBs would be pretty reclusive.

From my observations, seems like the biggest bucks are loners and travel alone outside of the rut.

I agree that some deer will tolerate turkeys some will not. I also agree that mature bucks do not really like turkeys. I don't like it if I am seeing turkeys while deer hunting, but I rarely do.

In Joe Hutto's documentary "My Life as a Turkey" ( http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes ... sode/7378/ ), he says that he started seeing more wildlife activity with the turkeys around. But he doesn't mention anything about big bucks. And in the film, you see does and fawns. So it may be true that does and fawns like to be around the turkey. I don't remember where, but I did read once that a symbiotic relationship has been observed between deer and turkeys. But I have not experienced or observed that relationship myself.
