The hottest time of the day?

Unread postby Milk Weed Seed » Thu Jul 19, 2012 3:21 am

A friend of mine and I always notice does and fawns feeding by the road at 3 o'clock or so, when it's the hottest. Is it that they are bedded by the roadside and the fawns are young and restless? I see it all over and noticed it every summer. I would think they would want to lay low in the shade at this time? I also get trail cam pics of bucks hitting corn piles at this time. But those piles are in the shade, and it's not as frequent as the roadside sightings.

Deer need to eat and water a couple times a day. I think statistically the hottest time of day is 2pm.

I realize that they must get water and food several times a day. But when it's so hot and with all that hair? I would like to think they would want to stay cool when it's hottest, no?

Are you seeing them lying down, the ground is significantly cooler than the air.

I've seen quite a few lately around the same time of day. Saw one today around 2 and pulled up next to it along the road and it just turned around and slowly walked back in the wood lot.

Probably a variety of reasons but it might be cooler for them if they are on their feet than lying down. They will get more air flow around their body standing.

The grass adjacent to asphalt/concrete grows the most.
They are eating fresh shoots of new growth.

True that.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

It was only 100 here yesterday but the heat index was off the charts. I worked out in the shed until noon and my eyes gave out too much sweat in them.

We mowed from 8-1 today.
112 heat index when we quit.
