Re: Acorns
Last week when I was at my lease I saw alot of acorns that had dropped already. They were really small also. With this crazy weather it looks like it will be a bad crop of acorns in my area. There were hardly any apples either.

Re: Acorns
They are going to be dropping where ever there are drought conditions = practically everywhere this year. The trees will unburden themselves of their fruit due to lack of water.

Re: Acorns
I pray for an easy upcoming winter. With all the food dropping already, will there be anything left in the winter, when the deer really need it ?

Re: Acorns
We had an easy winter we are probably running a surplus in deer. Additionally deer are browsers, 90% of their diet is trees/leaves/weeds. The carrying capacity will be fine.

Re: Acorns
Went hiking with the wife and kids after work last week in an area full of big mature red oaks, couldn't find a single acorn? (it was getting dark though) Last year there were hardly any, looks like the same this year. There is a nice white oak flat I hunt, from time to time. I hope those oaks are producing, I wilI find out when the season starts....

Re: Acorns
The drought is causing problems with everything.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Acorns
I may be against the grain, but I like poor acorn crops. Makes it easier to target the deer in general, and mature bucks. Bumper crops create more of a guessing game imo.

Re: Acorns
We spent the last 4 days camping, At night when the wind blew stuff was dropping on the top of the camper. It was acorns and they were small. Looked in some of the other trees around and saw a few big ones but there was not many anywhere I looked. If you are lucky enough tofind a good tree or 2 this year. You might have a hotspot, but ya better get there fast!

Re: Acorns
Oaks have deep root systems... I bet the ones near water fair well... Last week I went to check on some oaks near water with my bino's and could spot some fairly good sized acorns...
Some oaks not producing while only a handfull produce great is good for a hunter like me.

Re: Acorns
We haven't had any acorns in my bigwoods area the last three seasons. It's all red oak ridges. I'm hoping for a bumper crop this season! They have gotten way more rainfall in northern WI than at home or down south!

Re: Acorns
I went down to my property yesterday to spray my beans, which are really hurting. As i was spraying the edge of the field i notice a bunch of acorns that had already dropped some small ones with some decent sized ones.
