planting tree's for future stand site
i have been thinking about planting some fast growing hybrid poplar trees in an area void of trees for a future stand site. they can grow up yo 8' a year and at maturity will be 40'-50'. this area always holds deer and is to thick for me to hunt the ground, most of it is red brush and weeds. there was one tree that i hoped would soon be big enough but it got struck by lightning and died last year. if i did this i would plant them in groups of three to give more cover. any advise or thoughts.

Have you thought about using a utility pole and sinking that in the ground....works just fine for a climbing stand.

i want something natural with some cover to hide in. ive put some poles up on other land to use that way but always had some trees around it to blend into.

If yo do plant those, also plant another slower growing variety close by. Those Hybirds grow fast and die fast, in my experince anyway. That way your other trees might be ready when the hybirds die.

The Hybrid poplars do grow fast. If you plant any hard wood trees you'll never see them mature. Plant the hybrid for your benefit and the hardwoods for the next generations benefit. The Hybrid poplar pictured I planted 12 years ago.

I have been putting cottonwood in the spots I want a good treestand. I think they grow almost as fast as the hybrid poplars (I believe the poplar are poplar/cottonwood hybrids)

Re: planting tree's for future stand site
Interesting, I never thought about planting a tree for a future stand or for that matter using a hybrid to get in the air quicker. Just played what cards were infront of me. I don't own any of the land I hunt. If I did I bet that thought would have crossed my mind. I have a hard time being allowed to trim the trees I am in, planting is a whole new arguement. Great tip!!
It's not a problem, it's a opportunity for a solution.
