Re: Penn State Study on Hunter Movement While Hunting Whitet
This speaks volumes
.84km is roughly .5 miles
Most hunters preferred stand hunting in the early morning hours (0600 – 0800 hr; 72%
stationary), but more walked or stalked in the afternoon (1400-1600 hr; 58% stationary). The
average maximum distance hunters reached from a road open to public vehicles was 0.84 km (SE
= 0.03), and they walked an average of 5.48 km (SE = 0.193) during their daily hunting
activities.

Kind of sums up what most of us here see other hunters doing on state land. Sure paints a picture of how deer can pattern hunters for the most part. Great article, thanks for posting!

With what we all know about bedding, its shocking that only 18% of the hunter hunt side hills. The rest are either in the bottoms or on top. It was also quite shocking to me that most guys hunt on average in archery season in that area 4 days.

we found that hunters overestimated their maximum distance from the nearest public road
by nearly 2.5 times. - PG 41

I think most hunters hunt where the buck sign is, and that is in the bottoms and up on top... Most guys need a scrape line or rubs to validate the spot.
Some of my hill country spots I walk thru some awesome looking rub and scrape areas with beat trails, but in daylight you see mainly little stuff, I hunt the side of the ridges where other hunters don't go cause of lack of sign, and see the big bucks.

Any research I did with PSU was related to native grasses, not deer. I found this in my "daily" research.

I would think also that the average every day hunting likes to be able to see great distances. Only 25% of those studied even used a treestand. Also in the study area the roads are either on the bottom or the top, theres nothing right on the hillside.
I live about 20 mins south of where this took place.

Correct, let me snag a topo of that area, hold on. Youll see the terrain. Additionally, although pa has a high hunter population it covers many species. A lot of guys only hunt deer 5 days a year.
