My notes tell me small bucks start getting antsy from Oct. 20th on...
Bigger deer movement (for me) has historically been mid-Nov...

For me I would take the earlier week off, I love hunting Halloween day and the first few days of November...the beginning of the chasing seems to be on fire right about that time

It depends where you are hunting. In MN I would take the earlier dates off. In KS or IA I would take the later days.

Agree. This has been the best time for me too as far as rut action goes in southern WI.

I took the last week off in October through the end of gun season off this year. If I can't kill a buck then something is seriously wrong. In Wi I have seen more bucks chasing right around halloween then any other time.

I like the first full week of November, regardless of actual dates. Where I'm at its typically lock down the 12-16.

I also like the first week of November, but weather can either be your friend or your enemy. I'd say go earlier......lockdown can be some long days and tough hunting.

X2
I will be off opening week in september, bucks are usually easier to pattern and not pressured yet.

Re: What week to take off guys?
You never did say geographically where? So I can't really provide dates with any accuracy. Even in the Midwest from the northern states to the southern states there are some differences. From Kentucky to Minnesota could be 10 days difference in peak of the rut. Even from northern Iowa to southern Iowa there is a small difference (I hunt both areas). This is how I would break it down in my thought process. Early season (when the leaves are in full color) before the rut kicks in heavy, you will see less bucks than during the peak of the rut. I also think your chances are good at killing a nice buck during this time period. Now the peak of the rut (leaves are mostly brown and not much color). You will see more bucks during this time period than any other. I also believe this is the hardest time to kill a good buck. Bucks are cruising everywhere and some of the good bucks are tied up with does and not moving. After the rut winds down (leaves are mostly gone and the undergrowth is mostly gone) this is the time to knock down the old boy. Good luck and kill a good one.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
