When will it rain? This is getting ridiculous!

Unread postby Dewey » Sat Jul 07, 2012 8:45 pm

It's been a tough week for the deer around here I'm sure. If this drought continues any longer many of the crops will be lost along with many other things the deer eat to bulk up for the year. I would think the acorn crop will also really be affected by this. I realize deer and other wild animals are survival machines but really hate to see these conditions now that the herd seems to be coming back in some areas that were getting pretty low in numbers a few years ago.

Anybody notice the corn fields looking kinda funny lately? They look like the top of a pineapple with all of the leaves pointing upward tightly. I was told by a farmer that is what happens when the corn is suffering from the very dry conditions and has gone into drought resistance mode. If we don't get rain soon much of the corn crop will be beyond recovery.

All of the soybeans around here look pretty pathetic as well. Last year around this time they were almost waist high in most fields and now they are barely ankle high! :o

Northern WI just keeps getting pounded by rain meanwhile we stay dry. Seems I remember the opposite happening the last 5 years. Northern WI was suffering from lack of rain, lake levels were dropping drastically and trees were dying.......funny how things tend to even out! :?

Starting that "rain dance" right now. I'll be washing the car in a few minutes which will surely bring us some rain here in northern IL/Southern WI.

We have had some nice rain by my house, but over by my work its been bone dry for a long time. Interesting by my work, there are corn fields that are tossling out already. Amazing how different things can be 80miles away.

Guess we shouldn't complain here in southern WI. Many areas in the country are much worse off than we are!

Only a slight chance here after the front comes through. Not good.

Yeah its pretty sad. I feel bad for all the farmers. My yard is yellow, but I don't make a living off of it.
I've escaped for now to the cabin on Lake Nokomis (N WI) and it stormed last night for hours and rained like . Now its sunny and gorgeous out...not hot at all. I almost feel guilty for being here and escaping the nonsense down south. Almost.

Looks like my rain dance worked! 8-) Just came in from the rain and boy did it feel great! :banana-dance:

It wasn't much but after almost a month in a half with none I am not complaining. It did come down pretty steady for about 20 minutes! You could almost hear the ground sucking it up!

On the bright side I probably won't have to cut my lawn anymore. Right now it crunches when I walk on it.

Washing my car Saturday morning worked....just not for us. A town 10 miles south of here got a brief shower. As someone else stated the grass is crunchy and now my 20' maple tree is turning orange/red and shedding leaves. We never really had a winter, Spring came early, Summer came early....maybe Fall is starting early even though I know it is the lack of rain that is killing my tree.
