Deer Hunting Annoyance
What's your biggest headache when it comes to deer hunting? For me, it's absolutely the fact that I am severely allergic to whitetails... yep, in the worst possible way. As a kid, my dad gutted my first couple of bucks while teaching me the technique. At about age 14 I gutted my first buck solo, and wiped my right brow with the back of my hand while in the middle of it. My right eye swelled shut, I started wheezing...

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
Allergic to the hair I presume? I used to hunt with a guy who was allergic to deer hair and I had to gut all his deer and help him with them...

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
I'm allergic to deer dander- dander being scales of dead skin that peel off of all mammals. It concentrates on the hair, but is small enough to go airborne as well. Just gutting a deer creates enough movement for the dander to get in the air, and if I breathe it in it can cause an anaphylactic reaction (allergic reaction). If there's a nearby creek or pond, I'll get the buck all wet before gutting which keeps the dander from going airborne. Direct skin contact with all the dander on the deer hair creates a localized reaction.

I have this too but for me it is very, very mild. It doesn't affect me at all while field dressing. My only reaction was when I would spend time prepping raw capes to be salted for taxidermy. The dander caused me to get very stuffed up for a few hours then my sinuses would eventually clear and I'd be fine. It was enough to be an annoyance for me.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
Glad it's only mild, Mountain Man- I wear shoulder length gloves for field dressing and stay upwind of the buck while doing so, seems to help keep the dander away. If the buck hide is really dry, I'll slap on a surgical mask. I have my bucks processed by someone else so I don't have to deal with it.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
This is embarrassing to admit. I have no known allergies, but I will get sick literally 30+ times while gutting my deer. I have a very weak stomach! My dad and buddy think it's hilarious, by the end I am usually dry heaving so hard I can't breath. They will usually step in and help me out after a good laugh at me. It is just part of it for me though. If I can enjoy the outdoors and take an animals life the least I can do is suffer through it.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
I know a couple of hunters that go through the same thing, Indianahunter. I CAN NOT mention who one of them is for fear of retribution. Let's just say a dirty Q-tip from someone else will get this guy sick!
I have adopted a similar attitude, that's a great way of looking at it. I can't tell you how many people think I'm nuts- for hunting whitetail when they find out I'm allergic to deer.

I have a buddy like this too! He has gotten better over time, He used to puke several times while gutting a deer, now he still has a hard time, but rarely pukes.

Mine is unloading the car when I get home and putting the stuff away... The other is undressing outside and hanging my clothes before entering the house damn near naked. That's right Huntin'Nurse, I get naked in public, too!

Having to pee outside.... Too many layers to get off in the cold, and yet having to keep on blaze orange on without getting seen.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
late season stand hunting, when I am wearing 5 layers of clothes, then I have to pee because of all of the coffee I drank to warm me up, then start opening clothes trying to find the little guy in the cold underneath 5 layers, and it takes so long that I finally cant hold it anymore, so I dribble a little bit, which sucks, but at least then I can find it!!! Then peeing into the bottle and having a deer walk up and trying to cap a bottle of pee and zip up and put the pee bottle in my pack and pick up my bow with out getting busted. That is what annoyes me about deer hunting.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
I just go right out of the tree. Kinda gross, but the first doe I shot last year was eating leaves off the little tree under my stand that I relieved myself on two hours prior.

Re: Deer Hunting Annoyance
My biggest annoyance is the fact that I have to work a full time job and can't hunt 24-7.
The other annoyance I have is that Larry likes to poke around near my treestands when I am not there. He said he likes to look to see if there is deer sign in the area. So he wanders around through the woods looking for sign during the season. He smokes so it's really annoying when I am walking to my stand and find his cigarette butts on the ground on my way in.
(sorry Larry!) LOL!
