Blackwolf, tell me more about your big woods tactics.....
Blackwolf I really enjoy reading your posts. You are a fellow big woods beast and I believe you said you head up there every season for the rut. I would love to hear some stories and discuss tactics used for that time of season. Pics or maps would help illustrate also. What has worked, what has not, etc...Thanks in advance PLB...

This will be interesting.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Blackwolf, tell me more about your big woods tactics....
Thought I would first explain how I first started deer hunting and the path it has taken me since my first season in 1966. I grew up in Whitewater, a small college town in southern WI. and my first deer encounters were hikes I took out of town to various creek bottoms and small woodlots. Excited about the prospects of hunting them, I began practicing with my dads 50# Shakespeare fiberglass longbow. At the time you could buy a Junior Deer Archery li cense for $1, so in 1966, at the age of 12, I bought one and headed into the woods which meant walking 2-3 miles and looking for deer. My first hunt was a Dec Xmas vacation hunt and I ran into a group of about 6 deer in a small marsh and took a couple wild shots which didn't even come close but I was "hooked". I started trying to learn more about bowhunting and shared my stories with my dad, hoping he could help. My dad was confined to a wheel chair when I was 2, after a nearly fatal bout of polio but had been an avid hunter and had even bowhunted the first couple seasons in the early 50's. I managed to talk my mother into driving me out of town and picking me up before I could drive, but usually took my bike bow season. I saw some terrific bucks in those early days but was 16 before I was lucky enough to arrow my first buck, a little forky while standing 8 ft up in the fork of a large oak. I picked up a lot of pointers on tree stand hunting thru the small, local archery club.
My "real" hunts started once I got my license and a car my senior year of high school. I headed to a couple spots I had been checking on maps for some time. First stop was Jefferson Marsh and spent as many nights I could sitting a couple great spots. I only wish I had known Dan's techniques back then, I saw some real slobs but was never in the right tree. I took a couple smaller bucks but didn't have much time to hunt between college and work. I had decided after graduation, I was heading north to get close to Bayfield and Sawyer counties where I had heard there were huge bucks and endless miles of public land. In southern Wis, I just felt too penned in by private property.
To be continued.....
