Neck shots, ethical?

Re: Neck shots, ethical?
Definitely not with a bow, but I've had many successful neck kills with a gun. I will only do it on an un-alert deer 50 yards or closer. I aim for the base of the skull just behind the ear. Little high or low, clean miss, Right or left headshot or miss.

I shot a buck in the neck with a riffle and it was close, but it tried to run me over. I would rather not shoot it in the neck with a bow or gun.

Re: Neck shots, ethical?
I shot a 160 class ten point in the neck with my bow many years ago at about 10 yards. There was a loud "crack" of arrow hitting bone and the buck dropped like a sack of potatoes. As he flopped and moaned I put my bow on a string and started lowering it. When the bow touched the ground next to the buck he jumped to his feet and ran off. No blood, never found or saw that buck again.
I was hunting with a buddy from work and called in a nice 9 pointer with rattling horns and shot the buck a little to far back getting liver. The buck turned and ran out of the cover into a field and then bedded 60 yards from my friend right between us. I figured his exit from his stand would spook the deer and we would have a hard time finding it so I decided to stalk it figuring if it retreated it would go right past my buddys stand and he would get a shot.
I got to about 35 yards when the buck locked his eyes on me with that freaked out "Im about to run" look. So I drew my bow and the only shot was neck as the buck laid in the weeds so I took it. The big aluminum shaft went thru the neck and 1/2 the arrow hung out both sides. the deer jumped to his feet and took a few bounds. I could see my liver shot arrow was also hanging out both sides. Not wanting to see the deer suffer I took a hail mary at the deer as it retreated and got him thru the back of the neck with the 3rd arrow. The deer ran full bore into the woods... Very little blood.
Waited till morning do to the liver hit and found the buck 100 yards int the woods bedded dead. Neither neck shot hit anything vital.

Uncle Lou wrote:Neck shots are ethical for those who execute them routinely. I know a few hunters who only shoot them there.
I also know someone that only takes neck shots. He shoots a crossbow and every deer he has taken was shot in the neck.
On a personal level though, I would never purposely take a neck shot with gun or bow.

Re: Neck shots, ethical?
The problem with neck shots is that the spinal cord and neck arteries are smaller around than your pinky. If you go for the spine, bone could very easily deflect your shot even if you hit the right spot.

Re: Neck shots, ethical?
I have never taken a neck shot. I would on a subsequent shot though. Don't gun hunt either.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Only if the shooter is an expert shot and has the skills and time spent practicing like a special ops sniper.
