I am new to this beast style but if you're only walking through a tract of land one time to find trees, wouldn't it be tough to walk the same path in the dark? I was considering setting up tacks higher up on the trees or at the very bottom to avoid the wondering light. The trail would start in the woods, not directly at the parking area. After reading here, it seems like most of you avoid the trail markers all together.

Do you guys rely on GPS or navigational skills?

I pretty much remember where there at. I do occasionally use printed aerials or topo's and a compass for navigation.

Hide it for sure. Go in early come out late. If I need to mark a trail I do it on the way in and remove it on the way out. There are plenty of slob hunters around here who just try to get someone to do the work for them.

This is touchy subject for me.

I have spent two years hunting a new public ground. Last year started gaining a little confidence in my locations. Had a buddy scouting with me last year. He found what he thought was a decent spot. He reiterated several times " I don't want so an so to know about this spot" I said fine with me. The spot he proclaimed to be a awesome fell through. He hunted it a couple days. About three days later I found me a good spot. He stayed at the truck, I went an hung my stand. I came back an he had already pointed out to three others that stopped to chat where I was hunting. I told myself then that was it. So I will be hunting by myself this year. Which is no big deal. I just need to have a plan if I put one on the ground this year.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.
