Are we normal?
Are we normal human beings? I mean is it normal to have one thing dominate so much of your life? Other than family there isn't much more that I put much passion into. Is it healthy? I've been called obsessed, weird, crazy for the time I put in an things I do related to hunting. Im sure some of you have too. I have other loves... Fishing, golf, working out but none get 100% efforts like hunting does. I know very few individuals like this. Several on this site can relate. Is it that we just love hunting that much or is it more? An internal competitiveness? The need for solitude? Why are you not ok with just being "good" at hunting and live a more balanced life? Sometimes I even think its wierd. Thoughts?

Re: Are we normal?
I have come to accept that I am not normal at all when it comes to deer hunting. However, I do see plenty of other people totally obsessed with thier own hobbies so I do feel going bonkers over something is a common human trait.

I'm normal everyone else is messed up.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Are we normal?
Everyone obsesses over different things. On my street I'm the only hunter and I know everyone shakes their heads at me just like I shake my head at the golf nut, the model airplane nut, the running nut, the yard care nut, the I have a tv in every room nut, etc.

Re: Are we normal?
Its not a passion its an obsession, or hunting is not something I just do, hunting is who I am! In all honesty I think I may take things too far but I wouldn't have it any other way.

In my entire lifetime no one has ever accused me of being normal.

Re: Are we normal?
My wife, and most people I know for that matter, tell me I'm not normal, and that I am weird, and that I am rediculously obsessed with bowhunting, people at work make stupid comments every single day when I walk in with my bow and put it behind my desk so I can shoot on my lunch break, the few folks I know that bowhunt themselves even make comments regularly on why it seems to be so important to me. I often think the exact same as the original post, but quickly dismiss those thoughts because I don't care. It's what I love.
If that makes me weird or not normal, so be it.
Great question though, what is it that makes some of us take it to the next level and decide that just being good isn't good enough?

Re: Are we normal?
I can honestly say I have never been obsessed with deer hunting. I love to hunt, I hunt as often as I can but if I miss a day, a week or a season I just move on. I took a very large buck early in my hunting life and maybe that turned me off a little because where do you go from there? I've really focused the last 2.5 years on bear hunting. I don't think I was out in the woods more than 3 times last season to deer hunt with exception of sitting with my boys during the gun hunt.

True. Last week I was at my grandmas and watched the neighbor meticulously sweep his garage over and over for like an hour. Then he went to his yard where he hand picked up every tiny leaf and stick that had blown into his yard. His lawn looked like a fairway at a country club. Shrubs were trimmed perfectly. I said "if I ever get that way about my lawn, punch me". My grandma replied... "what's the difference between him and his lawn and you and your deer?".
Every man has his thing I guess. Some more severe than others.
