DIFFERENT BUCKS USEING SAME BED....

Unread postby dan » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:18 am

Stole these video's from a post about barn bedding bucks Carol made in the Youtube forum...

Although its a weird bed, these two clips show what I always talk about how several different bucks will use the exact same bed.

I would imagine when a wild deer learns to use a spot like that for a bed others will learn it from that animal. Great place to get out of the bad weather during the winter. Could make the difference between life and death. Could also make a big difference in antler size the following summer if your in an area that has rough winters.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Interesting they would feel safe in a spot with only one exit route? I have seen the north American whitetail pics and videos similar to these and always thought the lack of egress would be a deal breaker for smart mature bucks. I guess the security of cover trumps egress?
Do you think that after one buck starts using a shelter as bedding, other bucks just smell his scent trail and wonder in?
How do you think multiple bucks find the same bedding spot/s year after year? Does the cover and topography just jump out and scream out safety to them?

Barns don't jump out at me as great spots either... I think this is a rare occurrence.
I believe scent does have a lot to do with bucks bedding in the same spots, but, when walking thru a woods I can generally see spots and know there will be a buck bed there before I even get there based on elevation and layout... If I can see those features and know there should be a bed there, I know some of it has to do with bucks seeking out a certain type of spot... Especially true if you consider the beds I, and others, have made where there was never a bed before, but add the ingrediants and pretty quick a bed shows up.

Interesting how they both lay facing two different directions.

Good observation. Wonder if wind had anything to do with it? It's not like that barn was air tight...

That would be my guess as well.
