Re: When to put up your stand?
July-August would be fine... Sometimes it is best to hang and clear shooting lanes in Jan-April so the woods will look similar 2 fall...

I agree Bucky...I usually have all mine set before June and I do like setting them before all the foliage so I have a much better picture of what things are going to look like.

Re: When to put up your stand?
just depends if its a known killing tree and if the target deer your after is going to cross/pinch down into that area. For me I have killing trees with stand in them around august but if im scouting or figuring a buck out, im diving in once I feel like I have him pegged with a lone wolf for a hang and hunt.

Re: When to put up your stand?
If you know where you want your stand then April is a great time to put them out. The weather is great and the woods look like they will in November.
I just placed 4 ladder stands last weekend and have them set up so I don't have to return until the first time I hunt them. But I am hunting 80 acres of private land.

Re: When to put up your stand?
I would recommend doing it in the post season (Jan, Feb, march, April ) when you do your post season scouting which should reveal sign from during the season and have minimal green cover so you know how close or far to set up.
As far as how long you can get away with hanging a stand? The sooner the better. But every deer, and situation is different.

Re: When to put up your stand?
My thoughts on this topic. Great topic by the way. If I have a know stand site, bottle neck, flat on a hill side, even a known specific buck bed/bedding area would qualify. In other words a site where I know bucks will be traveling through. I am all about low impact so I like to do my heavy work when the deer are yarded up and not inhabiting the area at the time. I can go in look around hang a stand cut some shooting lanes, get the chainsaw in there and cut out that dead fall that is constricting view or shooting. The weather is cold, no bugs, ticks, snakes whatever. So I have done some heavy work in preparation for next year and have not disturbed one deer because they are a mile or two away yarded up. You can also use a 4 wheeler/snowmobile at this time and save on the back hauling all that stuff in. This is also a great time to look around, travel routes are well defined this time of year.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
