SHOT MY BIGGEST BUCK WITH A BOW SO FAR LAST YEAR AT OUR LEASE IN B.C. WASNT REALLY THAT BIG AROUND 120 BUT MY BIGGEST SO FAR. MY BUDDY MOSSY SHOT TRIPLE CROWN THE 180 VELVET BUCK AND ANOTHER LEASE PARTNER SHOT A 130. TRIPLE CROWN MADE OUR WHOLE SEASON. CANT TELL YOU HOW MUCH HILL COUNTRY BUCKS HELPED US.

Re: Last years hunt...
satisfied - yes, quality of deer was not as good as 2005, but still had some good deer. I am learning new areas of public to take the pressure off the private land... mostly going in from ariel photos. This spring I was able to get more scouting in so next year should be better.
As far as the buck I wounded, I learned I needed more practice in windy conditions and/or to aim lower when you stop a moving buck with a mouth bleat. He was tensed up and looking my direction when I released the arrow, and the 18mph wind would not let me aim steady. in hindsight I should have waited till he turned to move again or let him walk.

Re: Last years hunt...
Shot a nice buck with the bow, grossed low 130's but turned out to be a 5.5 year old. Also shot a doe with the bow in the second season. Boy shot a doe with the gun, his first with the gun.
What I learned was one never has enough spots lined up. Literly have 20 plus spots and was running out last year because of deer shifting locations. A lot was out of my control, clear cutting, land closers, too much bait by other hunters and just plain too much hunting pressure in others. I think a guy needs to allow for an extra $1500 in gas for the truck alone, during hunting season!

Re: Last years hunt...
Great Idea of a thread Dan!!
I shot a doe the last few days of the Mn deer season. What did you get?
No. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy as can be for getting a deer last season but last season there was a 1st for me. I wounded my 1st ever deer In 24 years of bowhunting. This deer happened to be a 150 to 155 Inch buck. I hit him a little high and forward but saw him 4 more times since then.Where you satisfied?
I learned a ton last year. I learned one particular bucks bedding area's and will use that to my advantage this fall If he made It through the winter and makes It through the summer months without getting hit on the road. I also learned allot about mock scrapes. From here on out they will be part of my hunting .Did you learn anything?
No. I believe I did everything I needed to do last year. I knew this certain buck existed and he was my goal last year. I believe I won the battle but the hunting gods weren't on my side that particular evening October 19th. That's bowhunting for ya I guess. The area I hunt Is a one tag area 95% of the time. That makes ones decisions tough at times.Would you do anything differently?

Overall i was satisfied, i learned a TON self filming. It is def the ultimate challenge in deer hunting. I decoyed a great 3.5 year old in and made, what i thought was a good shot but turned to only be a one lung shot and never recovered. I let him lay 6 hrs thinking i blew both lungs but when i walked up on him in a pool of blood 6 ft x 3 ft and he ran up a hill that no human could i knew the game was over. I looked the whole next day and nothing. Ohio i killed a 143", Illinois would of been a 140" as well. I got everything on film and still have a broken heart over loosing this deer. My deer was actually the smallest i had been scouting but i got him on a trail cam 2 nights in a row and finally got a good wind on day 3 and killed him with 1.5 hrs of daylight left. Ohhh by the way, this is the ONE day i left my camera at home so got ZERO footage! Never make that mistake again.

Re: Last years hunt...
I was dissapointed with my Archery season.I didn't take a deer and I hunted a lot and had done a lot of all year long preparation.I did see 17 bucks through out my home state hunting, all smaller.Welcome to New Yorks southern tier. My annual out of state hunt was good in the result,I shot a 20 inch wide 10 point with the rifle. A very nice buck and the camaraderie with my few friends on our annula out of stater always makes for an exceptional time. The quality of the hunting in Idaho where we go unguided every year has diminisged greatly as their wolf population has exploded. In 10 days of dark to dark hunting I saw three antlered bucks, walking 6 to 7 miles a day. I ordinarily see 4 to 5 times as many bucks. Over the last few years the deer and elk herds are steadily declining.

Re: Last years hunt...
I wish you had a "chose not to shoot" or a I "was dumb" category.
I passed up many shot opportunities at smaller deer and I didn't get one last year. There was 4.5 year old 130" public land eight point I would have taken in KY, but I crossed a small patch of grass I knew I shouldn't have, but I was totally exhausted and didn't want to go through any more blow downs. Sure enough, the does he was following walked over to that patch of grass and smelled where I had walked (I had sweat dripping off my face when I walked through) so they went on alert and he hung up out of bow range. They got nervous, took off and he followed them never giving me a shot. So I wasn't happy with myself for being in poor physical shape. In fact this thread has reminded me that deer season is coming up fast and I need to get off my but and exercise.

You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

Re: Last years hunt...
I was happy with my season. I arrowed 4 does and my best buck to date. One of those does I stalk hunted about 150 or so yards as she fed in the middle of a grass field. I saw 3, 3.5+ year old bucks last year, got two within range....wounded one and killed one.
If I had to do it all over again I would have hunted in December. For the first time in 18 hunting seasons I never hunted in December. I love late season hunting but my life was so busy last December I could not catch my breathe to hunt, my family came first.
With more areas scouted this year, and more importantly, more areas understood this year, I am going to push the action even more....I will continue to be aggressive with my set-ups.
