i think i must be lazy
i see all these posts about walking miles threw swamps to kill bucks and i say to myself there is no way in heck that i would do that. i am lucky to be able to hunt within 300 yards of my truck at all times and kill nice bucks. i dont think at my age i would be willing to go threw what some of you guys do.

Re: i think i must be lazy
If it were not for the fact that I have been doing it since I was young, I don't think it would be easy for me to start now... I took a well known outdoor writer out to the public marsh a few years ago who wanted to experience and write about my style of hunting. The guy was younger than me, and an experienced outdoorsman.
He kept asking how much further every couple hundred yards like a little kid, at one point with a crazy look on his face asked if we were lost... He got so worked up he puked. When I got him to his tree he wanted me to stay with him and was worried about me leaving him there, and said he would never find his way out if I don't come back... He asked if I knew how to find him again.
I think this style of hunting is not for everyone, but rather for a select few who prefer to work and play hard.
Someone commented on a recent thread I made about buying and hunting out of a Kayak and suggested it probably won't work for me cause I will likely get wet... I can't remember to many hunts in the marsh where I stayed dry.

Re: i think i must be lazy
Your style of hunting sounds good to me... it is so important to keep hunting fun, if it becomes something you do not enjoy I don't see the point in it.
For me, hunting swamps is how I grew up. I wouldn't want to be without it, deer hunting would not be enjoyable to me. My Great Grandfather, Grandfather and his Brothers, my Father and Uncles, my brother and nephew and many other family members have hunted my favorite swamps. The importance of being able to hunt these areas... I can't even begin to explain to anyone.
Sure, I would love to have access to decent buck hunting in a lot easier terrain, and sometimes that is what I try to do... but if you told me I could never again hunt my swamps... I may give it up.
Swamp hunting can sound crazy and like it is too much work to bother with... but there are so many contributing factors that make it worthwhile to me.
I don't think you are lazy at all... smart and fortunate, perhaps!

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. The sands of time and arthritis have slowed me down plenty. I put up stands but it takes me a long time and all my energy. I like to sit for a long time after hanging a stand.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: i think i must be lazy
The thing I like about big swamps and marshes is if you have the ambition and decent physical ability you can completely get away from hunting pressure and have your own little heaven. Few people have what it takes to do that on a regular basis and give up way too easy.
This is what I grew up doing and really didn't know any other way, I guess you could say it's in my blood. My Dad and uncles all loved hunting marshes when they were younger. When I hunt other parts of the state I still eventually end up somewhere with plenty of water. For some reason I am just drawn to the nasty stuff nobody else wants to deal with. Not only that but it may have something to do with the fact that big bucks love calling the stuff home!!!
Do whatever you enjoy doing. As long as you are having fun, that's all that matters in the end!

I am finding it harder and harder not to be lazy! Have to keep pushing myself to get to those back-in spots that were a breeze 20 years ago.

Re: i think i must be lazy
You ain't lazy. When I go to Walmart I don't purposely park at the far end of the parking lot if there are spots by the front door. It's being efficient. I use to have private years ago, where big bucks roamed close to my truck. Just now with public they're roaming a mile away from the truck.
I still love it though, really satisfying getting onto big bucks in areas everyone says doesn't have big bucks.

Re: i think i must be lazy
I'm lucky to have some pretty good private land to hunt right around my house and another spot about 5 miles away. The land I hunt you can never get more than 1/2 mile away without running into land I can't hunt on. But I know it would take alot more for me to get motivated if I had to trek a mile back into the swamp with hip waiters on and a step latter and all my equipment on my back thats for sure. You guys that do this deserve to shoot a big old swamp buck!!!!

Re: i think i must be lazy
I live in a very populated area of the state. When the students are in town this place is considered the 3 largest city in pa. PSU is an AG school so many of these kids hunt. You can still hunt this style without killing yourself, the key is finding places which people overlook. A simple thing such as pulling on a pair of waders for 5 mins will deter 99% of people who hunt. Im not sure why but it does.
Im working on myself getting to a point here where I really want to push it to an extreme level and get so far off the grid I wont see anyone, period. I live in a very weird area when it comes to terrain. Cross a mountain and drop into the valley, it looks like the midwest. Go north, hit big mountains(not west size) and large forests. Theres lots of lakes, creeks and river bottoms, swamps, pine forest, hardwood forest. So me I am not used to only hunting swamps however the thicker and nastier the place is and the more effort it takes the less people you see.
Thats the piece in my equation that has always killed me was pressure from others who dont hunt like I do. I dont expect them to change, in fact I am glad they dont want too but for me, to play the game the way I want to play it I cannot have people just blundering into areas, picking random trees and giving it a shot. It has never panned out. Every time I find a spot where I am virtually the only guy in the area I do extremely well. My success takes a nose dive fast on heavy pressure properties.
To give you an idea of the amount of pressure that well known public spots can see in this area. The first day of rifle season this year I counted 20 trucks at both parking areas along a main road and 50 on the back road. Do you know how much land is out there? 1400 acres and at least 400 of it is a solid canyon leaving 90 trucks(1 or more guys a truck) to hunt 1000 acres. No thanks.

I don't think that we always go deep in the public areas a couple of miles back. Were we are hunting is were a mature animal is bedding. That can be within sight of a road, hiking trail or some other overlooked area. But the majority of the time, it is were people don't want to go, and the area gives the buck a security advantage. And yes, sometimes those areas 300 yards or closer from the road are were you need to be! The key is finding these areas!

Re: i think i must be lazy
True, there are always some spots close to the road, BUT as a rule of thumb I have found much better reliability with an "undisturbed" hunt at least a half mile from road and 1/4 mile from any logging road or trail where grouse hunters, hikers etc might interfere. I am referring to my experience hunting Wis Big Woods. (Chequamegon)
