Toting bow up tree...

Unread postby phade » Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:36 am

Have a set I am prepping this coming weekend.

Come fall, the stand tree will have a bit of water standing.

With most of those here familiar with swamps...are you just throwing the bow over your shoulder while climbing (or a sling of sorts)? Using a bow rope would be hard since the water level will be a foot or so deep. I plan on using screw in steps given to me for this spot to save me some time come fall, but I will be hanging the stand on the first time in.

I would hang the stand on a branch and pull it off with the pull rope as you raise it... I have done that successfully. You could also hang it on a branch then climb down after setting the stand and get it.

Put an extra peg in the tree the first time u hang it, then take it out after you sit it the first time.

I usually hang it on a branch or push down some marsh grass or cattails to lay my bow on to support it out of the water then pull it up with a rope.

1/8th Inch nylon plastic coated rope. Been using this stuff for years. I tie It on top around the tree head height while In my stand and the other end I tie a 3 Inch stick a 1/2 Inch In diameter that I wedge In my bow to lower and raise. Works great.

I really like to strap my bow to my pack for the hike in (Eberlestock X2 with but bucket). That way I have two arms free for navigating through rough terrain and climbing my tree.

Probably going to have to hang a step/hook for the bow and climb back down for it. Was hoping to make it in one trip, but doesn't sound too reasonable.

After watching Dan's video on doing stands I think the trick is keep it simple and use the tree to block the bucks view from you. To me more trips up and down mean less noise or chance of noise - remember the tree is helping to block your movement from the buck. again just IMO

When you prep the tree, just tie your pull up rope in that same day. Leave it so it's about head height when it hangs down. It will be fine come fall when it's time to hunt. Tie it to something so it doesn't blow in the wind.

As do I. I'm surprised more people don't do this.

Many of us hunt public only so trimming out trees, pre hanging stands and bow ropes is not even an option. In one day, hunt the spot and don't usually return again that season.

Yeah, pretty much. I honestly never minded that much if my bow got wet to begin with anyways. Early season I have been rained on soooooo many times. Firearms are different but I know I have deep sixed my bow more than once and it has been fine. There aren't many components that will rust on it, and the string hasn't been affected by it to what I have to offer. I would say hand a lanyard now or big deal. Not like it's going to mess up your sights being in water for 5 mins. Maybe I wrong but this seems like not a big deal.

Unless you are using a whisker biscuit arrow rest, then it will not work.

I also have a Primos bow sling. My wife bought me the thing, and I didn't really think I would ever use it. But, it is very handy. I always keep my strings covered with it until I am set up and it can be used to throw your bow over your shoulder while climbing.
