Are you worried about water ?

Unread postby Swampthing » Sun Mar 18, 2012 4:38 pm

So far this year I have found NO water. Each and every creek, canal, cattail swamp are dry. Places I use to dread passing through are easy access. So if I have easy access then so do other predators. Water is important for secure bedding as well as a daily necessity. Wondering if it stays like this, am I gonna see some changes in home ranges for the few deer we still have. Possibly immigrating to river bottoms or such. How far from a water supply will ( can) a deer commute?

Water is not a worry here as we have more lakes than land it seems, I imagine the deer will move to water faster than moving to food, they need water on a more regular basis than food. Maybe the spring season will bring on a good amount of soaking rain and help to fill those areas back up with water

The areas I hunt around my home all seem to have natural springs that are wet year round. Even in the hottest days of august they continue to trickle. My road trip hunt is a large grassy swamp that stays wet also. So water has never been an issue for me.

If your area stays in drought conditions, I think water will affect how deer use it. Finding any remaining water sources could play big for you.

Pretty wet in the Garden Peninsula of the UP. That is where I am right now, and pretty wet down in SE lower where I live and hunt in MI. Hope you get some rain we look pretty good.

Our creek bottoms are dry also. Luckily we have some ponds and a river running through.
