Indianahunter just mentioned keeping an open mind, I think that is important. And Ninja was outlining how he is studying how to use scents effectively. I am not big into scents but was toying with some vanilla the last couple years.
This topic also brought a reference to nosejammer. While it seems easy to pick on this type product as a gimmick, the predator hunting world has been "misting" for some time. I am no expert on misting, but it is very similar to the nosejamer concept for coyotes.
I think if we rely on scents and other certain products for success we are asking and expecting too much, but if we use certain products in certain situations and it gives us a slight edge at the moment for the shot, then you can start to believe in certain products.
Cover/attractant scents? Some of the best use them. Discuss

I have used vanilla and Smokeys gland lure for cams- i believe it has upped the value of a given spot but neither really appeared to bring em in for miles (which is so hard to describe tangibly)
On the other hand- if I am hunting where cattle roam you can guarantee i am walking in cow pies and have seen the benefit of it as i had not seen deer react to my tracks. On the same note i know a few guys who set their boots on droppings from deer, rabbits, others....for the same reason. The family farm has lots of feral/crp fields- i keep my early season camo with golden rod and feel it helps from the downstream of my tree perspective.
My favorite example is when my buddy mike and i were hunting an overgrown orchard and he smeared rotted apples all over himself. Post hunt he looked like he had gained 50 lbs especially one Mickey Mouse looking hand- for he brought the yellow jackets in more than the dang apples ..
I think almost everything sold to hunters now a days is a gimmick- knowledge is key
