Are you finding fewer rubs from the 2011 season?

Unread postby oneflag » Sat Mar 03, 2012 4:02 am

I have been doing some scouting this winter and early spring for the upcoming 2012 season.
I have hiked some old spots and some new areas. I am finding some rubs from last season but nothing like past years. Some of the (sign post) I call them where not touched last year. These are trees that year after year are roughed up by bucks.
The weather was so different last season, could that have an effect. I know there are a ton of variables but I personally don’t see the quantity or quality of rubs in my neck of the woods.

You probably found most of your sign in years past on south facing slopes, this year its on the north slopes as the wind was out of the south A LOT.

I have seen the same thing. I've been doing a lot of tromping around my place and the rubs just aren't there like they've been in years past. I did notice in season that areas that usually were full of rubs had a lot more scrape activity.

I have not been finding anywhere near the usual amount of large rubs that I have found in past years. I think many of the areas I hunt the mature buck populations are way down compared to the years during or immediately right after EAB.

I've found more rubs than in years past on two properties and less on two others.

Drastic reduction on one and the other has fewer rubs but just as much other sign as usual.

I had more rubs this year then I've saw In at least 15 years. Reason being, more mature bucks were In this woods then previous years. It's a competition thing.

Here is the equation: more bucks = more rubs or: Less bucks = less rubs....
With that said, I am seeing slightly more rubs this year as the population rebounded a little, but not near as many as when the population was much higher.
