BUSTED... Swamp Beast Style!

Unread postby Singing Bridge » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:43 am

On the way in to your swamp stand, you cut oversized buck tracks headed for the bedding area you are going to hunt- you are very confident he is in there and know exactly where the buck prefers to bed. He cannot see your stand- but he is less than a hundred yards away from you. With less than an hour of daylight left, the winds calm and the swamp becomes rather quiet... and that's when the unthinkable happens! While quietly shifting stand position you slip and make a LOUD noise... nothing metallic, but you know the buck heard it and he is locked onto your position, though you were careful to set up where he could not see you from the bed. He did not bust out, he held his position but there is less than an hour of daylight remaining.

Sit tight and make no calls or other noise... There are noises in the woods. Sometimes you spook them. Sometimes you don't. The only way to find out is to wait and see... The last thing I personally would do is make calls after putting the bucks full attention in my direction.

I have had this happen more than once. When it does happen I remain completely still for at least a few minutes. Deer seem to remain alert for some time but then forget about it and go back to whatever they were doing. They hear all kinds of noises and don't freak out right away. I agree grunt calling is the worst possible thing you could do.

I have been thinking about carrying a squirrel call to use when walking in hardwoods with crunchy leaves. They are probably the noisiest critter out there.

Hold tight and hope for the best. Most times this is happening and you don't even know it.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Hold tight and hope for the best! Bucks hear noises all the time that startle them. If he don't hear anymore maybe he stages before dark? More than likely he holds tight until dark and live to see another day! I would not call to him because you are giving your position away. I would not make any other noises to cover up either because he already is on alert to your position. One more noise and he probably busts otta there!!

Hold tight and do not call.

Sit there quiet, and execute your original plan.Like other have said, he'll look your way, and when you are perfectly quiet, he'll forgot all about "the log that fell" or whatever the deer thought it was. If the buck thought the sound was human, I'd think he bust out of there right away.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

We've got a number of votes outside of the popular opinion here, but no voice in writing yet... don't hesitate, we are all here to learn. As in all aspects of deer hunting, there is no "absolute" answer to this for every circumstance and situation. 8-)

when I was hunting in Illinois for a weekend I was walking to my stand and just got a new grunt call and I gave a few soft grunts while I was walking. When I looked up I seen a very nice buck running across the field right for me.......Thats the only time that worked for me I'd hold tight, you already have made a presence stick to the plan and hope he figures the sound is natural.

I would sit tight and wait it out. Giving a grunt would surely put that deer downwind of you in short order giving you away while he was scent checking the grunts
