Going in for the kill

Unread postby Z7WIBoy » Thu Jan 19, 2012 3:16 pm

SO you have done your scouting, found the beds, picked your trees. Wind is right and today is the day to go in for the kill, what do you pack in with you for that trip? I see a lot of talk about Badland packs and other stuff being brought on the trip - what do you bring. The reason I ask this is take my past season for example, in my back pack I have water, sandwiches, chew, grunt call, rattling horns, puffer bottle, and Team Fitzgerald Deer Dander. I setup on mock scrapes and what I thought was a good funnel and even a food plot and guess what - tag soup?
As a grasshopper to Beast Style just curious what others pack in for the trip and why?
Thanks and look forward to feedback :)

Other than my stand and my bow, I have a bow hook and a haul line.

LW Stand with Jacket bungied to it,
bow, arrows & release (some guys forget them sometimes  )
rangefinder and HHS vest. License, knife, and cell phone, Milkweed seeds in 35mm film canister, flashlight, and glasses.
Sometimes I bring a grunt tube and binoculars
That's it, everything else is just extra weight IMO

A rattle bag can be just as effective as horns.

Water for sure.

Milk weed is better than a puffer bottle, but both have their place.
Bow holder/ratchet pruner/hand saw.
Compass and good head lamp.

Tags/pen/cable tie.

Dollar bill.

Enough warm clothes.

Baby wipes....

Food if I need it.

A couple of t-screw in steps.

Binos/rangefinder.

milk weed is by far the best wind detector around ...yo cant watch powder react 100 yards away like milk weed...it gets 10 -15 yards away and diapers, you can see milk weed until its out of your view

Good point about the milkweed, but a puffer bottle can also be useful when milkweed is not practical.
I carry both on every hunt.

I am a hunter with bad habits such as puffer bottle - found some milk weed this weekend on scouting trip and was pretty impressed with what I saw. I hunt as much as I can with 3 kids and full time job just like most everybody here. I take a week of vacation for the rut but mainly opening weekend with son and a couple of Saturdays and maybe a weekday here and there. I have never packed a stand in before always hunted private and out of ladder stands. the none mobility cost me the buck in my avatar 4 times this year - thinking he would come to the magic scent I was putting out. Just walked by everytime at 80 yards
So now with the alpha and 3 sticks and a treewalker for rut hunting I am set just need to figure out what to pack.
Thanks and keep feedback coming!!

Its a good idea to practice setting up your sticks/stand so you can be efficent and quiet.

Yes, setting up your stand quietly is very important and the only way to do that is eliminate any source of noise from your stand and sticks. If it is not quiet I will not take it in the woods.

I try to pack light unless I am hunting all day during the rut and then I bring food and extra water. Otherwise I bring, GPS, cell phone, range finder, bow hook, bow rope, safety harness, milk weed, compass, headlamp(rarely use), knife, gutting gloves, grunt call.

Everything has a purpose and goes in a small fanny pack. I have been packing lighter and lighter every year. Thinking about eliminating knife and gutting gloves this year. If I kill a deer I usually take my stand and stuff back to the truck anyway. I will fill a special pack to grab just for this reason with knife, gutting gloves, Glens Deer Handle, camera, extra flashlight and wet wipes.

I pack in two different ways. Long haul and short haul. Long haul is a back pack loaded with everything I may need. Short haul is water, candy bars, baby wipes, stand and steps.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I carry the basics in a fanny pack for morning and evening sits. During the rut I sit all day so I switch to my backpack.During the season I like to go thru my fanny pack and anything I have yet to use gets taken out!
