Where am I bedding? A bucks perspective.....

Unread postby mn5503 » Thu Jan 19, 2012 6:20 am

I'm a mature buck and this is my home. mn5503 (Steve) has been stomping around in here since he was a kid, about 30 years now. Sometimes he wakes me up from my naps, when I'm not trying to outrun gray wolves. Steve only hunts on the north side of the creek that you can see on the bottom of the satt photo these days....

A little bit of information about my home.

Lots of windfalls, old pines.

A large portion has been clear cut and grown back, most cut in the 80's, leaving me a nice mix of popple, ash and pine now. There are some maples, no oak trees.

I forage mostly on the young growth on the forest floor and along the beaver dams. Steve has seen me feed in the beaver ponds, much like a moose would do. There are quite a few young popples that I can still reach leaves on also.

Prevailing winds are from the NW.

The area all along the creek is very wet. Where it looks nice on the picture it's actually tall grass knee deep water.

I like to follow trails along the creek (far enough up where there are trees), the cover is extremely heavy and impossible for humans to walk through quietly. Unless they cut those nice trails, I like to use them too.

There's not many of us left in here, as wolves have been doing well, but we few that are left still like to use the same area to bed down. Can you find my favorite place to chill?

Brain teaser thread. Thinking about it Steve.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

How about some topography.

What's the scale on that photo?

What's adjacent to it?

That's classified info. :snooty: Generally woods in every direction.

Not much more than a gradual 20' elevation change on the while picture. About 500-600 acres pictured....

I'm not saying it is or isn't. I want to know your opinion.

If there's not much more than a 20' gradient differential anywhere on the property, is topology a moot point?

I believe it always plays a role even though it's not much of a change here. The land gradually gets higher as it moves away from the creek. No large hills or ravines on this particular spot.

I would say the elevation change here would play a bigger role in travel/trails than bedding. Not much of an advantage to be gained from a bedding standpoint.

To continue with a buck's perspective theme.............

"I really wish mn5503(Steve) would bring in a new face or two for me to skirt, wind and bust in stand. I'm a little tired of seeing his ugly mug in that heater body suit with a bow hanging up on some hook looking thing.

Sincerely yours,

Booner"

Need to look at home on a computer. But its good to have another great hunter I knew from AT on the Beast. I had to jump ship from AT too much ridiculousness over on that forum ;-).

Really cool thread idea! Any topography in the area of relevance? Probably not but just thought I would ask any way. I will take my best stab at this, I would want to scout out the shaded areas pretty hard, I cirecled where I think your buck might call home, hopefully he doesn't make me look too dumb.
