early season food. i have always believed that a muture buck is most vulnerable during the first few weeks of the season while he is still in his summer feeding pattern.

In four seasons with the bow I have killed two over three year old bucks on public in January, to kill those bucks I looked for a good spot with alot of recent deer sign and set a stand then sat in it.

Killed one over three year old in mid December and one over three year old in mid October on private from the same tree.

Killed one three year old in November on private.

To kill those bucks I set pre sets and hunted them at the right time.

I shot a very old buck in Mid October with a 30-30 by seeing him a few times during the summer/fall and setting up according to where I thought a good ambush spot was....that was my first deer I ever killed.
I purchased a rifle and deer tag because I had seen him at a place where I stored my excavating equipment,
that was on private but had other folks hunting there.

Shooting a very old and big buck got me hooked on this stuff.
I hope to get another some day.

The earliest I have killed a buck is Oct 15th, which used to be NY's opening day. Most of my deer have been killed from the last week in Oct to the first week in Dec. Most were killed in the first week in Nov to third week in Nov.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

In Wis, season opens in mid-sep. Velvet is shed and bucks are really in pre-rut which is part of the rut. One can find rub lines to feeding areas already etc. So technically, hunting in Wis you are always hunting in the rut with the least rut activity in Dec when hunting food sources is best technique. So, no I have never taken a buck outsie the rut, just during different phases of the rut. I used to enjoy hunting those early rub lines In sep etc, but because of work have had to make choices when I want to hunt most so end of Oct thru Nov 15 is my pick. My Sep time is for chasing elk out west if I can.

I have never had good luck in the late season. Every other time of season yes.

My biggest bucks have come from hunting between early September and October 15th... I have taken some decent late season bucks too, including one that was shot the last few minutes of the last day of the season in January.
I think you already know my tactics.

You have more time to hunt before NY season opens, than the whole NY bow season.... I'd have different tactics too if I was hunting that early. Wisconsin dosen't leave you guys much time for your jobs.

After weeks on the road doing non stop hunting, I'm feeling pretty satisfied by then. I don't really enjoy the month long NY rifle season where they kill every living creature.

I've killed nice bucks in all phases except late season... In fact my biggest buck I killed opening day because I sorta patterned him... I new 2 different spots he was crossing a logging trail and I happened to pick the one that he picked that day on the first try...

Both that buck and another one I shot in the middle of October I happened to be set up pretty close to there beds I just didn't know it at the time
