Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
Do you think Coyotes kill a lot of deer? Just wondering what your experiences are?
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I do think they take a lot of fawns. And that was proven this past summer, with minimal fawn sightings.

I think if they are kept in check they are fine if not I think they can really hurt a population. Fawn survival would be key as if one dies its actually two gone for the next year if it was a female fawn with her baby.

I think so. I've seen trail camera pics of yotes taking deer down and I think around here fawns and injured deer are one of the main food sources. I have a coyote on film chewing on a deer leg. The snow can hold off for the scouting, but once it comes game on!

Re: Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
When we had excessive numbers of coyotes at a small private farm I hunt, we never saw fawns. For about 5 years we never saw a fawn. I tried hunting them but only got a few before they wised up. But last year parvo came thru and wiped out the majority of them, and then last spring we had fans back...
I also lost two deer to coyotes on that farm that were left over night... We would find coyote poop with deer hair in it all over the place...
Like any animal, they have there place. But numbers need to be kept in check. Either hunters and trappers do it, or as in my case, Mother nature steps in.

Yes!
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Had a guy from the UP tell me he found 17 fawn skulls near a coyote den a couple years ago. Don't know if its true or not?

I am positive that coyotes are negatively impacting deer populations. I have witnessed first hand that an area overpopulated with yotes will have far fewer deer. No big surprise there though I guess.

Re: Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
I think they ding some fawns but feel with a harsh winter where all animals are food oppressed they can really be brutal.
on the family farm here in w ny i shot a coyote 12 yrs ago- it was 68 pds- the DEC was in awe (as I was working there at the time). My buddies dad shot a 92 pd one a few years back. The largest taxidermist in the area mounted it and takes it to shows. The state still claims 45 pds is the average male. Obviously not the case
5 or so years ago i got a trail cam pic of a yote- this year I am guessing I got around 100 pics, including group pics in october and november. (if anyone can help me post them - glaldy will)

Re: Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
I have heard of Yote hunting clubs around but I m not a part of one. I have also never yote hunted before either so I wouldn't know where to start. I wouldn't mind talking with them and asking them to go through what I hunt and take'm out. I dont' need to be there, just kill'm, get'm out. A big dent in the coyote population should take a few years to rebound. I would hope at least.
It's not a problem, it's a opportunity for a solution.

Re: Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
There are a few studies that have just been completed and a couple still in progress that show some alarming trends with yote predation on fawns. One of the studies showed 71 percent of the fawn mortality was from Yotes. I think that number would tend to be accurate.

Re: Do you think Coyotes hurt the deer population?
I have noticed this past year that coyote activity and trail cam pics have been the highest they have ever been on my family's land, and deer activity was one of the worst its ever been.
Deer trails were much more faint than previous years, and trail cam pics and actual sightings while hunting were much lower than usual.
