I have used a thumb release, they are very good. The one ones I would use or recommend is a carter release, the carter chocolate or chocolate light are AWESOME releases, but $. Right now I use a tru fire edge buckle.

I shoot a back tension, Carter Evolution.
For everything, hunting/target/3d whatever.
It has a saftey that you hold to draw then you let it go and push your shoulders together.

Wrist strap, trigger release for me.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I shoot a Stan thumb release. When used properly, it really knocks out panick the same way a tension release does.

Re: index finger, or thumb release, or fingers ?
Those of you who shoot back tension...are you ever scared at the fact that the release might not go off when you want it to, before its too late? I had severe target panic a couple years back and I practiced with a back tension release to relieve the panic. When messing around with it I had a couple instances where the release didn't go off, or stuck a while before it went off. I am pretty sure I was using a carter.
I always wanted to try and get back in the habit of back tension, it is definitely a lot more accurate for me. However I really have no problems out to 40 yards with my index finger release.

Re: index finger, or thumb release, or fingers ?
Switched to a thumb release last year and loved it. Only problem I found out was the hard way in the cold weather I had a neck gator on and my anchor was off. Need to shoot it with gear on and make sure nothing's in the way. I switched back to an index.

Re: index finger, or thumb release, or fingers ?
All three. Depends on the weapon, the game and the distances. I have squirrel hunted with a thumb/back-tension because they are so precise. Most hunting I do with index finger/wrist strap incase you need to punch or, like JRM said, shoot with gear on.
I use three fingers for the recurve.
I practice mostly with a Tru-ball HT back tension release. This helps a ton with control and pin steadiness. Competition / long range shots, Carter target 4. I use the method where you relax your index finger with constant pressure on the thumb trigger. For wrist strap I use an edge fold back.
Bottom line for me is no matter what you shoot or how you release the arrow, shoot it like a back tension.

Re: index finger, or thumb release, or fingers ?
I went to a Hot Shot Tempest 3 finger thumb release this year. I can't believe I waited so long to go to the thumb release. I can hold into the wall of the bow better with the thumb release better than I can with the wrist strap. I also like the fact that I can just leave the release hooked on to my d-loop and dangle while in stand.

I don't know if any of you have seen Kentucky Afield, but Tim Farmer lost his hand in a motorcycle accident, or farming accident, anyway he uses a mouth release and shoots with one arm. And he does it with good accuracy. My hats off to the guy, that's a challenge.

Shot fingers from 1987 til 2001. Wrist strap, index style release since.
