mobile setups, what dont you leave home without

Unread postby rack addict » Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:36 pm

I'm getting into trying to be a mobile hunter and going on some beast hunts next year. What are things that you take in your pack that you dont go on your hunt without? I want to make sure that I'm as prepared as I can be and don't want to get to my spot and go oh crap I wish I had....!

If I am in the timber and hunting till last light...a GOOD headlamp/compass is a must for me, especially if I do not go to that spot alot.

Bow/stand rope.

Screw in bow holder.

Enough clothes/gloves/hat/hoodie etc.....to stay warm as the cold creeps in.

Dragline/field dressing tools....not that important....I can come back to get deer.

Enough water.

Good trimming tools.
I always have a good pair of ratcheting pruners and a good hand saw in my day pack.
Screw in saw from my Gerber short pole saw fits on a 5'-10' telescoping paint pole...
This pole makes a good walking stick. :character-oldtimer:

I know alot of folks say they dont trim.......but sometimes I believe it is necessary.

Deer tag.

A dollar bill......
If I shoot a deer and need to go get a sled/whatever....I tag it and put a dollar bill in its mouth.
Easily ends disputes over whos deer it is if someone else tries to say its theirs....
Call LE.....say I put a dollar bill in this deers mouth....show em....end of story. 8-)

Harness and lineman rope.

Rangefinder is good to have.

Small/powerful handheld flashlight.

Baby wipes.. :shhh:

Couple of T-screwins....for handholds while in stand.

Camera.

Cell phone.

Some clip on orange/reflective markers.

Cable tie.

Grunt call/can call.....rut.

Fawn bleat/turkey box call....doe hunt.

Clip on my pants a Kershaw whirlwind.

Buck sheath knife on my day pack.

Milkweed pod.

Powder wind check bottle.

Release

Back up release.

Pull rope, hand saw, screw in bow holder and an extra pair of gloves. I find while setting up and walking I seem to always find something moist to touch, or my hands sweat setting up. That extra pair of gloves and sitting with dry hands for the whole sit is crucial I find.

I take:
sling stand - which I wear around my waist.
L W sticks.

In my backpack:
2 methods of making fire - a bic lighter and a magnesium
range finder
rope
bow hanger - I usually have 3 because they are light weight and it's easy to loose them.
compass
GPS
camera
call
tiny folding gutting knife
folding saw
bow release
I should take my phone but I never do

For sitting extended periods of time, you need to comfortable. Take what you need to be comfortable and efficient. If you need to trim some branches take a saw & loppers. Nothing worse than an itchy bung because you didn't bring wipes. Water & food are essential. I like the way Zap thinks.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I used to take the kitchen sink, now I have leaned up what I take. I can fit it all in a small fanny pack. I take a compass, wicked tough saw, pruning shear, grunt call, rattle bag, can call and screw in can call holder, screw in bow holder (team realtree ez hang short version), streamlight flashlight, zip lock bag with james valley scent and a few wicks and q tips for applying the gel, milkweed seeds in a small ziplock bag, and then on the belt of the fanny pack I carry a gps in a holster, a retractable bow hoist, my knife, and then I wear a rangefinder around my neck on a lanyard, and my binoculars. When I walk around I buckle the harness to my LW climber so it is on my back instead of sliding down my waist.
