Late Season Hunting....sort of
Kind of a weird late bow season so far. Above average temps, no snow (most of WI). So, the deer have so many choices....cut corn, cut beans, whats left of the acorns, etc. Are the deer herded up in your hunting area? What strategies do you use when the deer are not in a wintering pattern, but its 'late bow season?'

Scout ready to hunt, look until I find a place that looks good.......set up.
Or bait is a viable option.

If they are still feeding in those spots then its a lot like hunting earlier in the season I would think. Maybe baiting would work too? Its hard to back track them from bait to beds if there is no snow.

Put the bait along a known travel route from bedding to food source.
Scatter it out....
Get a set placed closer to the bedding than the bait.
Wait three days then hunt it.

It sure don't seem like late season does it. I hunted Sunday. No snow and 45°. Deer are thin and scattered. I,m still applying normal hunting methods. Remote buck beds. I had a small 3 1/2 and a. 1 1/2 year old buddy tagging along with him.

I've been hoping for snow so I can look for a good one to hunt. If I go on bare ground I'll go back to early season tactics of hunting close to known bedding spots.

The lack of snow sucks.....we have snow where I am but nothing like normal. Will make the best of it and hunt until the bitter end......just relying on cameras too much now vs finding a good track to verify a good buck is around.

Warm weather means a mobile set up for me. Walk until I find a decent track, some fresh scat, or some sign of recent activity. Days are limited so I'm burning bridges on spots during my evaluation.

I want snow and temps in the single digits for lows!!
Looking forward to having almost two weeks off work starting Friday. Hoping winter finally gets here but until then I will keep hunting known beds until some snow falls so I can pattern them better. Deer sign is very scarce right now in my areas I hunt but that doesn't mean I am giving up. If I'm not working I will be hunting hard till the last day.

Ten day forcast: Highs in the upper 20's to low 30's. No snow! Central WI.
I'm kinda taking a break but I'll be out there before it's over.

It has been a warm winter so far.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Late Season Hunting....sort of
It felt like I was hunting in march today. Since we had snow earlier everything is flattened and all the trails and sign from earlier this year is plain as day. Yet the ground is hard so its darn near impossible for me to tell what tracks are fresh and what ones are old.
My plans for hill country are to keep bouncing around hunting lee side beds. I figure as mild as it is they aren't stuck on south slopes yet, so I'm hitting everything.
For marsh back home, I plan on doing the same thing that produced last late season, hunting the edge of a cedar swamp a mile away from the active fields hoping for daylight movement.
