Freak rack bowkill

Unread postby rut » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:58 pm

I've been getting several trail camera pictures of this freak racked buck for the past few weeks now;the majority of them being at night .The few daytime pictures that I did get showed it mainly showing itself during the last few minutes of daylight.Just this past Saturday I had it at 30 yards but was unable to see it clearly enough through my peep to make an accurate shot,so I let it walk, vowing to be back on stand Monday (today) afternoon. So,I got to my stand right at 1430 hrs. and settled in for the afternoon hunt, hoping to at least see this freak again. The afternoon was very quiet-deer wise, until about 1630 hrs. when a lone, small doe came strolling by and stopped at about 10 yards from my stand. This deer stayed around feeding on small buds and other unknown foods for several minutes,so I decided to screw with it a little bit by blowing on my grunt tube. The deer would look around a bit each time I hit the grunt call and then go back to feeding.About the third or fourth time I hit the grunt tube I heard crunching coming from behind me.As I turned to see what the source of the noise was,I saw that it was the freak coming my way;apparently in response to the grunts. The deer came to about 25 yards and stopped, looking for the source of the grunting.I didn't have a clear shot at this time so I waited to see what the deer was going to do next.About a minute passed by and the buck angled left bringing it to 15 yards from my stand and wide open.I drew back my bow settled the pin behind the shoulder and touched off the shot. The hit was perfect with the arrow making a complete pass through. At the shot the deer bolted about 70 yards and crashed just out of sight.I got down from my stand walked over to where the deer was standing and found my arrow sticking in the ground on the off side off where the deer stood. The blood trail started sparse, but good enough and then opened up to quite a good spray.Upon examining the deer I found that the arrow had passed through both lungs and the liver before exiting. The buck isn't the biggest I've been after in these woods but one I really wanted to arrow because of the unique rack. There are three slobs I got on camera also and am hoping to run into them one of these days.I shot the buck with my Strother SR-71 Black Death,70 lbs. @ 29".Arrows are 250 CX Maxima Hunters tipped with the new 100 gr. Mathews edition 1 1/2" Grim Reapers. The head is still in perfect condition and just need a resharpening of the blades.Good venison!

Cool buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
