Trail cameras illegal in Michigan during off season
I thought some of you may be surprised by this (I was). Trail cameras are illegal statewide in Michigan during the off season unless they are within 100 yards of your house. If you watch this "proper baiting" demonstration video from the MDNR listen closely @ a little over three minutes into it and you will hear him state this.

Re: Trail cameras illegal in Michigan during off season
I didnt watch the video yet, but if thats true, that is ridiculous.. How are you supposed to take inventory during the summer months?
I know, I know, the same way they used to do it back before trail cameras were around, but still..

I will check into that, but my guess is that fella is assuming your cameras are being placed over a bait or mineral. I don't see any way that the DNR can legally tell you that trail cams are illegal to place over a trail or travel area when not placed over an man placed attractant.

I think Dan once posted on here that trail cams are illegal out west somewhere now. Maybe it was Montanna or somewhere in that neck of the woods.

If they ever tried to push this kind of in Wi, I would just tell them they are out to monitor my land for trespassers. Funny how state DNR's want to take, take, take, and give as little as possible back to the hunters.

Yea seems confused and is still talking about trail cams in regards to bait sites, not just having trail cams in the woods without bait by them.

Here is a regulation I found in the 2010 Montana rule book....
Motion-Tracking Devices and/or
Camera Devices
It is illegal for a person to possess or
use in the field any electronic or camera
device who’s purpose is to scout the
location of game animals or relay the
information on a game animal’s location
or movement during any Commissionadopted
hunting season.

No cameras in off season. Can you use them in season?
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Trail cameras illegal in Michigan during off season
I just started using trail cams here in July but I have lots of friends that have them out year round....I will call the DNR later today if time allows....I really think the guy in the video is confused.
Be safe and enjoy!

Re: Trail cameras illegal in Michigan during off season
They are outlawed completly in Montana I believe... And in Wisconsin we can't leave them out over night on public land.

There are a lot of hunting laws I bet guys are breaking that they don't have any clue they are... Some states make you purchase a permit to film hunts on public land.

That is a good point g3s. That could be what he meant.

Yes.

In Michigan you need a permit to film for commercial purposes. I'm not sure if there is a cost associated with it.

Re: Trail cameras illegal in Michigan during off season
After watching the video, I have to believe they are just stating that you cannot have bait outside of season, even if its a mineral site or a camera site, doesn't matter. The reason you can have it within 100yd yards of your house is cause that is considered recreational feeding and you can put a camera on that if you choose. That is my understanding, but as with any rule, the law enforcers might have a different take on it. I wish they would of clarified how far apart a hunting sight is, or gave a set distance between piles. Actually wished they just wouldn't have brought baiting back, but its back.
