I'm guessing that 3 of my deer were 3.5, and 1 of them was 5.5.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

I'm pretty positive my 1st buck was a 2.5yo.
I'm pretty sure my 2nd was a 5.5yo.
I checked both.

I would have guessed the buck from Illinois would be 3.5, but the rest of them I would have thought at least 4.5. Regardless, you pulled it off again Spy. Congrats.

I choose 4.5 his body was huge, very close to 300 pounds and the skull structure on his head and antlers were very thick compared to some 3.5 year olds i have.

Re: What Age Buck Did You Shoot This Year?
obviously im not sure but i chose 5.5 because of body size antler mass, skull denisity and simply his back teeth were pretty worn down, i heard the best way is to have a lower front tooth cut ?? one of those was broken on him . i might possibly have a pic of my deer from last year he had a monster body but nothing non-typical but same rack structure, same markings on forehead too.

I'm pretty sure mine was 5.5 because his body size, nose, mass & size of chest. I didn't even look at the teeth because I put very little confidence in that after 2.5 to actually be able to tell anything.

There are 4 age classifications that are easy to spot with tooth wear. They are 1.5, 2.5, 3.5+ and real old, LOL!!!
I still hadnt seen anything I want to shoot this year.

Due to sheds and trail cam pics for 3yrs, I'm pretty sure the buck I shot was 4. Spy, I agree the IL buck was 3yr old. The massive hog from Nebraska was at least 4 or 5

Re: What Age Buck Did You Shoot This Year?
I want to say my deer was 4.5 but not 100% sure and most of my buddies would say at least 5.5. Just curious, how is everyone aging their deer and what is the most reliable way to age a deer? Aging my deer by tooth wear puts him at 3.5 but I question my ability to analyze tooth wear because I haven't had much experience. At the same token, I don't think it is very difficult to read a chart and look at pictures Unless you have experience with a specific buck (i.e. trail cam pics and/or sheds) is there really an accurate way to age a deer? Not trying to start another topic but just curious how others age a buck.
I am saying 4.5 for the poll question

Most accurate way is scientific via tooth cross sectioning....
Aging by wear is guessing game after 2.5yrs of age IMO
There is a chance given where you shot your buck that he is only 3.5yrs of age... I have seen 3.5yr olds push into the 170"s in certain areas of WI CWD Zones. I agree with you that buck is most likely a 4.5yr old

Re: What Age Buck Did You Shoot This Year?
The first buck I shot I am pretty sure was 3.5, he was about a 125" buck, but he weighed 200 pounds dressed. I cant see that buck being a 2.5 but there is always the chance. The second deer I shot was a 2.5 year old. Either way I wouldnt change a thing!
