Todays hunt...
Usually, a hunt like todays would be posted with an upbeat spirit. After all, I shot a nine pointer, and missed a long shot at a monster, and Dave got a small buck. But we hardly cracked a smile today. There was not much talking either...
Today was opening day of gun deer season. Every year I get together with my good friend Dave for hunting. I met up with him this morning at his farm. We both went out for an hour in the morning. The plan was to meet up an hour after the morning hunt and go drive some public land big buck bedding areas... The morning was uneventful, so I met Dave at his stand. He had his cell phone on vibrate and got it out... He had a puzzled look on his face and said the Sherrif keeps trying to call him... He did not answer. On the way to do the big drive he got a call from his wife saying the Shawno Wisconsin Sherrif keeps calling the house and wants to talk to him.
He told his wife he would deal with them after hunting...
On the walk into the woods he got a call from his Mom in Texas, but did not answer it, and said that he would call her from the treestand while waiting for me to drive the marsh.
I kicked up a small buck and saw it heading for Dave who appeared to still be on his cell phone.
He put the phone in his pocket just as the buck busted out of the cattails. He picked up his gun and dropped the buck at the base of his tree... When I got there, I could tell right away something was wrong. There were no smiles or comments. I broke the ice and said "what is it?"
He said "Bob's dead"
Bob is Daves slightly older brother. An advid hunter and very close with Dave. He ain't much older than me... It was a shocker, I had hunted with Bob... He baited for me when I shot the 500 pound bear...
I said "what happened?" he did not know...
He said it was fitting that he died on opening day, a day that meant a lot to him.... I told him he should go home and be with his family. He said no... Bob would want me to hunt.
He said that his Mom told him what was going on and he hung up the phone and said I am shooting the next deer I see for Bob, he looked up and the young buck was trotting under his stand. The next drive was full of deer, and shots fired ( but not by Dave )
But it was hard to enjoy the hunt...

Sad day in the woods for you and your friend. Very sorry for your loss.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Todays hunt...
I think Bob would have liked you to post pics of the bucks you guys got ...
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
