Back from Vacation

Unread postby James » Tue Nov 08, 2011 2:37 pm

I'm back from vacation, spent the last 9 days hunting extremely hard in WI. No buck, but a lot of good stories and encounters. As tradition I spent the first 5 days hunting with my dad on our family farm. We saw a lot of chasing Oct 28-Nov 2 but mostly small bucks. Sunday night the 30th i finally saw a 3yo shooter in our picked corn field but he was with a doe and would start coming to calls but then figured out his hot lady in front of him looked better. I haven't been filming much this year but the new iPhone 4S takes some gorgeous 1080p video and the steadycam software built-in is impressive for how shaky my hands are. Here is a little guy with some potential that I passed one evening on the farm. Rattled him in from a long ways off and he came to within 8 yards. I had another opportunity at him on the opposite side of the farm.

On the way back home on Wednesday night I snuck in a quick hunt on my lease in hill country. Within 15 minutes of sitting I had a buck I call corky come in which drew in a decent 2yo 10 about 17" wide that got me pretty rattled for some reason. I think he was going down, but the doe saved his life as she busted me 10 yards short of shooting the 2yo. As they ran off I thought, "good, I had no business shooting him with plenty of time ahead of me" Didn't see another deer that sit.

Next up I traveled back to MN to hunt my farm here with my daughter, and try to get her a deer before the orange army hit the woods. Thursday night we had small bucks chasing doe all over the entire woods but nothing came within range of a shot. Friday morning she got her opportunity but apparently had a tree blocking her shot as dad filmed from above her on the ridge. (Doe is in the left of the frame) After the doe climbed the opposite ridge I promptly climbed down and cut down the offending tree with my pocket saw.

Friday, I headed back to my hill country properties in WI and to avoid the orange armies in MN. It was a fun but frustrating time. Arrowbender and I were seeing shooters every sit, with Saturday morning being my best encounter. I had at least a 4yo big bodied buck and a 2yo chase a doe past me at 10 yards like I have never seen before. Two loud burps and a "HEY!" shouted at them did nothing to stop the frenzy. Here is a video of corky (twisted G2). He followed me around, I think I saw him almost every hunt! He has neat white socks on also.

Back at it this weekend, hoping there is still some action and that everything isn't locked up.
