What do you use to gauge rut activity in your neck of the woods?
Most guys use word of mouth I find, I try to find any info directly.
Dead deer on roads is a big sign, the roads around here are RED with blood everywhere. I went down a major hwy and couldnt belive the # of blood stains and deer laying on the road.
I mentioned this to a friend who happens to be a car insurance agent. He said his business sees an average of 7 deer hits per MONTH.
THIS week alone, minus today he had already had 17!
Another tip off is trail cams. Alot of guys have brought up mid day hunting and 2 cameras checked by my crew had a total of 8 MATURE bucks moving in the afternoon 12-2 crossing fields and general traveling.
Id say its on. This week I wasnt able to hunt at all, but hopefully next week is good to me. Good Luck out there.

from the end of october to mid november i listen to the scanner after sunset. you can definatly tell when they start moving when the number of calls doubles or triples over a day or two.

I drive 80 miles roundtrip to work everyday so I can really gauge deer movement by the number of roadkills. Seemed like the switch was flipped around here on October 25 for some reason because roadkill numbers exploded overnight. Some does must have came into estrous early.
Otherwise I just base it on personal observation in the field. This rut has been a tough on to pinpoint. Not sure where they are at this point. Things have been very quiet the last week or so.

Road kills is a great indicator.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I gauge it by the date... Rut is the same time every year.

I used to believe that until this year. I don't know what the heck is going on this week around here?? Nobody in this area is seeing anything moving.

Shine at night Dewey...
I have been shining and bucks are moving at night only and that is what I don't understand. Daylight movement has been nonexistent even though hunting pressure seems fairly minimal.

RUT IS THE SAME TIME EVERY YEAR LOCALLY... BUT DAYTIME MOVEMENT CAN BE EFFECTED BY WEATHER, MOON, SUN, WIND, TEMPATURE, ETC...

We're seeing some deer, but absolutely no rutting activity. Last year this weekend our group had two on the ground, deer were chasing, but bucks were moving, there were scrapes/rubs etc.
But this weekend, we've probably seen 8 does so far, and each one was completely calm, grazing, showing no signs of being chased. I saw one small buck tonight and we was acting the same. There are nowhere near the numbers of fresh scrapes or rubs. I know that research shows the rut happens the same time every year, but it sure doesn't seem like it this year in northern MN. I'd sure think we'd have seen some type of mood change in the deer that we have seen so far.
