What goes with you on a typical hunt?

Unread postby huntinsonovagun » Thu Nov 03, 2011 12:56 pm

When I started bow hunting 10 years ago, I took everything I needed in a standard size fanny pack. It seems I find more and more crap to take hunting each year. It's really getting to the point of being too heavy to realistically take with me each time, yet I feel as if I "need" everything I take with me. I'm trying to find a balance. I think I need to simplify. What have you found to be that balance?

Here's a list of what I take:

backpack (duh...)
glow tacks
knife
flagging tape
5 screw in tree steps (for whatever I may need them for- bow holder, pack holder, climbing higher...)
wallet
cell phone
2 grunt calls
Pack Rack
pull rope
lineman's rope
Tree Saddle (this is the second year, not the actual "Tree Saddle" but like and arborist's saddle)
Safety harness (when stand hunting)
rope for hanging from saddle
wind checker (seeds)
2 flashlights
camera
Lone wolf sticks (recent purchase...these really increased my pack weight)
any extra clothes I may need for cold weather
rangefinder
binos
EZ hanger (when stand hunting)
limb saw

It's hard to imagine I actually can find room for that crap now that it's all typed out. My pack can weigh up to 30 pounds including the LW sticks. Plus I still have to carry my bow. It really seems ridiculous, but a lot of it gets used every hunt. I'm considering dumping the saddle system and using a LW stand and bungeeing everything to the stand and utilizing pockets. The issue of taking all the crap I do is my single biggest complaint with hunting. I feel like I should be light, quiet, and mobile. Carrying 40 lbs of gear is not light, quiet, and mobile.

If I can't fit it in a pocket, I don't take it...

A saw
a pocket knife
a small bow rope
milkweed
small flashlight

Sometimes I take a grunt call

knife
saw
rope
2 pegs for pack and bow
flashlight
rangefinder
milkweed
gps
water
snack for longer sits
grunt call, rarely use it though
obviously stand, steps and harness.

I used to carry binos all the time, but i find i move around to much when i have them with me. I do carry them when on the move during gun season though. I try to keep it simple.

Powder wind checker is only good for general wind direction.

Floaters, milkweed seed is one of those, show you what happens to your scent stream over a longer distance.

Dont forget your releases guys...

bow rope
release
wrist guard (when bulky clothes are on)
bow hook
grunt tube
gloves
neck gator
snack
water
knife
small flashlight

Bare minimum for me, I carry all my stuff in a small fanny pack... but Im going to purchase the Badlands TSO very soon.

I do carry my cellphone obviously.. but usually leave my keys at the truck hidden and my wallet inside my truck.

I leave the back pack at home unless it's an all day sit. Then I take one for food. Otherwise I follow the pocket rule.....if it doesn't fit in my pockets...I don't take it. I will strap extra clothes to my LW and sticks if I have a long hike in.

I have too much stuff but I know if I take it out of my pack I'll need it.

grunt tube
the can
compass
gloves
light
license
saw
pruning shear
safety harness tree rope
tree rope for pack
bow hanger
range finder
7 sets of extender rope for allmy sticks and my stand
stocking hat
hand warmers
knife, pelvic saw, gut hook
safety harness
camera
bow rope
pack rope
xtra slide buckle rope for a stick or stand incase one breaks
bottle of water
snacks if i'm all day sitting
bread sack for the heart
cell phone
rattling horns

It's a lot of stuff but the pack doesn't get heavy till I strap 5 climbing sticks onto it.
