Public Swamp 9 point down

Unread postby adrenalin » Tue Nov 01, 2011 10:16 am

Last week Sunday I skipped hunting to scout out a new swamp I never hunted before. I found a setup off aerial photos where a bunch of swamp Island connected and formed a natural funnel perfect for cruising bucks. So on Friday morning I headed out to the new spot 3/4 mile in. The morning was real heavy frost and 20 degrees when I got out of the truck. Planning to hunt all day I got all set up a few minutes after the season opened. The first couple hours passed with out a deer sighting. Then around 9:30 the heavy frost started merlting off the leaves and it sounded like it was raining in the woods. At 9:45 I heard a few footsteps and looked to my left to see a nice buck coming fast out of the swamp. He was about 30 yard away when I spotted him because of a tree limb blocking him the whole time. So I quick grabbed my bow and went to clip on my release and wouldn't you know, hit the bow with it stopping him in his tracks to look right at me. After about 15 seconds he decided it was all good and turned to stay in the swamp and scent check some trails. I had one hole about the size of a basketball that was my only shot at 30 yards. When he got their I stopped him and let one fly. Unfortunetly my arrow path was right through the branches at the top of the hole. My arrow deflected and hit him in the hind leg. I got down right away to get on his trail knowing my only chance to recover him was to bleed him out. About 60 yards from the shot I found an area of blood about 10 inches in diameter and splattered. As I tracked him the blood was heavy the whole time. Things started to look like a artery hit and I moved fast on the trail. Just under a 1/2 mile later I came to a huge blood clot, pausing for a second I took 10 more steps and their he was! All I can say is I got real lucky hitting the femoral artery. I guess once in a while things go your way.
