Re: Hunting Beast Podcast Episode #2 - Deer Sign with Dan In
These podcasts have been great, I hope you keep them coming, Dan! I found myself saying, quite a few times, "so that's what was happening there" when hearing something you said vs. things I've seen in the woods in recent seasons. I feel like this gives me the chance to mentally re-scout some of those things, without actually going there, and with a more informed perspective...if that makes any sense.

backstraps wrote:Dan when you and Mario was talking about the scrapes separating the bedding points, it got me thinking....
I know where there are some bedding areas, that have the pre rut scrapes that get heavier as rut comes along....however, the scrapes are basically at the tip of the draw that separates the bedding points. Long points, that generally doesnt see the buck during daylight hours.
So my questions in relations to the podcast scrape comments...
The scrapes you guys refer to, are they generally close to the buck beds? Close meaning the buck could possibly smell the scrape from his bed?
Is there a general area where you see these scrapes?
The scrapes I have killed big bucks off of were all within 100 yards of the beds.

Another great podcast.
Dan - would you be willing to share the results of your informal rub height study? I.e. where the "peaks" showed up on your graph(s) and how they correspond to buck age in your area?

Can't get it to download on my phone and can't find it on iTunes or my podcast app. Am I searching for the wrong thing?

Jake/PA,
Download it from a desktop computer, then move it to iTunes to sync it to your iPhone. KLEMZ has a step by step process in Podcast #1 thread. Check it out there.

Dan,
You mentioned how it is important to recognize whether sign was likely made in a particular spot during the day or at night. What things do you key in on to be able to tell whether you are looking at daytime sign versus nighttime sign?

Location... If the sign is adjacent to a doe bedding area its a good chance its day sign laid down while the does are in the bedding area.
If the sign is exiting a buck bedding area in close proximity... Good chance cruising elevation rubs are made in day light too...

Thanks Dan,
I think I got what you are saying. It's not so much about the sign itself but about "where" the sign is.

Dan and Mario thanks for uploading and taking the time to create these podcasts for everyone. What is great is that i can listen to these on longer rides up north. I just find it hard to keep my focus on the road and not on your podcasts! Haha. Keep up the great work!
