The Destiny Buck
I got a nice one with the muzzleoader this year. I have had him on camera all year but sporadically. I dont typically hunt mornings, honestly I am not a morning person. So anyway there is the background.
The morning started in camp, I am the only hunter. I woke up late because of the time change and not paying attention. Made some coffee and got ready to roll out. I saw him on. my cell camera the night before so I knew he was close. I crept into the stand as the sun crested the hill. The wind was blowing in the perfect direction and staying consistent. I climbed into the stand as usual an started talking to my brother, the man that taught me to hunt but passed away a few years ago. I usually say hi and ask for his help. On this morning I just said hey Tim, I think i got this one but feel free to hang around and watch. About 6 minutes later I was out of the stand with the buck in my hands. I was hunting a creek crossing that all of the bucks filter through this time of year checking for does. I heard him coming down the hill across from me, quick wind check, still perfect. See the rack through the trees while he is coming up towards me. Time to seal the deal. I had his path of travel in mind and readied my scope waiting for him to take his last step out from behind a tree 30 yards away. When he did the hammer struck the primer, smoke filled the air and the deer did a high front leg kick from the quartering to shot. He went up and turned in the air with is front legs high, flopped over onto his back and slid down the freshly dropped leaves dead. I looked at him, reloaded the muzzleloader and climbed down to claim my trophy. All of this cool as a cucumber. I wasn't nearly as excited as I would normally be, especially for a NC dandy like this guy, (for a number of reasons eastern NC doesn't have as many big deer as other places.) It was a feeling of a plan that came together. Satisfaction. That day I just knew when I left camp this guy was coming home with me. I had my binos, my gun and milkweed. I left all my calls, my scents, my in the backpack in camp and just hunted. It was the best in all of its simplicity. I have watched this guy grow, patterned him and sealed the deal. none of that compares though to just simply hunting with my brother. Thats why I named him the destiny buck.
